Hillary Clinton has LOADS of Experience...
Education

Wellesley College where she majored in political science.
Yale Law School, where she served on the Board of Editors of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action.

Political Activist Experience

Pragmatic Liberal

Always fascinated by radicalism, she wrote her senior thesis on a great radical organizer of poor people, Saul Alinsky of Chicago. Though when she was offered a job by Alinsky, after she wrote about him, and she turned him down--because she didn't think he was effective enough. She said to her boyfriend at that timebe in politics you have to win. And it didn't look to her like Alinsky was winning enough of his battles. She came to question his methodology and concluded in her thesis that larger government programs and funding were needed, not just community action at the grass roots.

She was the commencement speaker at Wellesley in 1969, chosen by her fellow students--there had never been a student commencement speaker there before. The scheduled speaker was Sen. Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, who Hillary had campaigned for, a Republican, the first black to be a member of the U.S. Senate in a hundred years. In his remarks he was patronizing, Hillary thought. He seemed to defend the Nixon administration's conduct of the war, and didn't mention the wrenching events of 68. When he finished, Hillary got up and extemporaneously excoriated him. As a result of that speech, she was featured in Life magazine as exemplary of this new generation of student leaders. They ran a picture of her in pedal pushers and her Coke-bottle glasses. That article made her well known in the student movement in the U.S.

She monitored the Black Panther trial in New Haven. She monitored the trial to see if there were any abuses of the rights of the Panthers on trial, and helped schedule the monitors. Her reports were turned over to the ACLU.

1971 Senator Walter Mondale's subcommittee on migrant workers, researching migrant problems in housing, sanitation, health and education.

Political Campaign Experience

1964 In high school, volunteered for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater.
1968 New Hampshire, Eugene McCarthy primary challenge to LBJ.
1972 Campaigned in the western states for 1972 Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern
1976 Jimmy Carter Presidential race, served as an Indiana campaign coordinator.

The Clinton Campaigns (Bill Clinton has stated Hillary played pivotal roles in his campaigns)

1974 Bill Clinton's Congressional race (L)
1976 Bill Clinton's Attorney General race (W)
1978 Bill Clinton's Governor's Race (W)
1980 Bill Clinton's Governor's Race (L)
1982 Bill Clinton's Governor's Race (W)
1992 Bill Clinton's Presidential Race (W)
1996 Bill Clinton's Presidential Race (W)
2000 Hillary Clinton's Senate Campaign (W)
2006 Hillary Clinton's Senate Campaign (W)

Legal Experience

1969 Truehaft, Walker and Bernstein in Oakland, one of the most liberal law firms in the country. They defended the Panthers.
1970 Yale University - city legal services, provided free legal advice for the poor.
1971 Staff attorney, Children's Defense Fund in Cambridge, Massachusetts
1971 Carnegie Council on Children, legal consultant.
1974 Impeachment Inquiry staff in Washington, D.C., advising the House Committee on the Judiciary during the Watergate scandal.
1974 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville School of Law - One of only two female faculty members.
1976 Rose Law Firm. In 1979, she became the first woman to be made a full partner.
1976 Worked pro bono on child advocacy.
1978 Jimmy Carter appoints Clinton to the board of the Legal Services Corporation.

She was twice named by the National Law Journal as one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America, in 1988 and in 1991.

First Lady of Arkansas

1979 Chaired the Rural Health Advisory Committee
1979 Introduced the Arkansas' Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youth, a program that helps parents work with their children in preschool preparedness and literacy.
1982 - 1992 Chaired the Arkansas Educational Standards Committee

She was named Arkansas Woman of the Year in 1983 and Arkansas Mother of the Year in 1984.

Clinton had co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977.

Served on the boards of the Arkansas Children's Hospital Legal Services (1988-1992)and the Children's Defense Fund (as chair, 1986-1992)

Corporate board of directors of TCBY (1985-1992),Wal-Mart Stores (1986-1992), and Lafarge (1990-1992)

First Lady of the United States of America

"She's very smart ... people rightly give her credit for having been a participant in the Clinton administration and for doing some heavy lifting on issues." Barack Obama, speaking of Hillary Clinton's White House experience and contradicting Obama supporters - The Daily Show with Jon Stewart 8/22/07

When asked about his wife's role in his administration in August of 2000, President Bill Clinton said "She basically had an unprecedented level of activity in her present position over the last eight years.''

1993 First to bring a serious universal healthcare plan to be considered by the US Congress
1997 Helped develope the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997

The First Lady led the effor on the Foster Care Independence bill, to help older, unadopted children transition to adulthood. She also hosted numerous White House conferences that related to children's health, including early childhood development (1997) and school violence (1999). She lent her support to programs ranging from "Prescription for Reading," in which pediatricians provided free books for new mothers to read to their infants as their brains were rapidly developing, to nationwide immunization against childhood illnesses. She also supported an annual drive to encourage older women to seek a mammography to prevent breast cancer, coverage of the cost being provided by Medicare.

Hillary Clinton was the only First Lady to keep an office in the West Wing among those of the president's senior staff. While her familiarity with the intricate political issues and decisions faced by the President, she openly discussed his work with him, yet stated that ultimately she was but one of several individuals he consulted before making a decision. They were known to disagree. Regarding his 1993 passage of welfare reform, the First Lady had reservations about federally supported childcare and Medicaid. When issues that she was working on were under discussion at the morning senior staff meetings, the First Lady often attended. Aides kept her informed of all pending legislation and oftentimes sought her reaction to issues as a way of gauging the President's potential response. Weighing in on his Cabinet appointments and knowing many of the individuals he named, she had working relationships with many of them.

She persuaded Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to convene a meeting of corporate CEOs for their advice on how companies could be persuaded to adopt better child care measures for working families.

With Attorney General Janet Reno, the First Lady helped to create the Department of Justice's Violence Against Women office. One of her closest Cabinet allies was Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Following her international trips, Hillary Clinton wrote a report of her observations for Albright. A primary effort they shared was globally advocating gender equity in economics, employment, health care and education.

During her trips to Africa (1997), Asia (1995), South America (1995, 1997) and the Central European former Soviet satellite nations (1997, 1998), Hillary Clinton emphasized "a civil society," of human rights as a road to democracy and capitalism.

The First Lady was also one of the few international figures at the time who spoke out against the treatment of Afghani women by Islamist fundamentalist Taliban that had seized control of Afghanistan.

One of the programs she helped create was Vital Voices, a U.S.-sponsored initiative to promote the participation of international women in their nation's political process. One result of the group's meetings, in Northern Ireland, was drawing together women leaders of various political factions that supported the Good Friday peace agreement that brought peace to that nation long at civil war.

Hillary Clinton was also an active supporter of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), often awarding its micro-loans to small enterprises begun by women in developing nations that aided the economic growth in their impoverished communities. Certainly one of her more important speeches as First Lady addressing the need for equal rights for women was international in scope and created controversy in the nation where it was made: the September 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.

Senator From New York

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hillary worked with her colleagues to secure the funds New York needed to recover and rebuild. She fought to provide compensation to the families of the victims, grants for hard-hit small businesses, and health care for front line workers at Ground Zero.

She is the first New Yorker ever to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

She has introduced legislation to tie Congressional salary increases to an increase in the minimum wage.

She helped pass legislation that encouraged investment to create jobs in struggling communities through the Renewal Communities program.

She has championed legislation to bring broadband Internet access to rural America.

She worked to strengthen the Children's Health Insurance Program, which increased coverage for children in low income and working families.

She authored legislation that has been enacted to improve quality and lower the cost of prescription drugs and to protect our food supply from bioterrorism.

She sponsored legislation to increase America's commitment to fighting the global HIV/AIDS crisis.

She's working for expanded use of information technology in the health care system to decrease administrative costs, lower premiums, and reduce medical errors.

She's worked to ensure the safety of prescription drugs for children, with legislation now included in the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act, and her legislation to help schools address environmental hazards. She has also proposed expanding access to child care.

She has passed legislation that will bring more qualified teachers into classrooms and more outstanding principals to lead our schools.

Hillary is one of the original cosponsors of the Prevention First Act to increase access to family planning. Her fight with the Bush Administration ensured that Plan B, an emergency contraceptive, will be available to millions of American women and will reduce the need for abortions.

She introduced the Count Every Vote Act of 2005 to ensure better protection of votes and to ensure that every vote is counted.

1. What has Hillary done for women's rights in this country? I read about the
international efforts she has made but I see nothing about helping women (specifically) in the US. What has she done to smash the "glass ceiling"for American women other than herself? What has she done to make "choice" widely available to all our women?
I don't want to hear about "prevention. That is just a "waffle" and a bone to the right. She has done stuff for children but what about women? What about health care for women? I am afraid I do not see much effort on behalf of her gender in the United States.I would appreciate it if you could educate me about this.If there is something I am unaware of I would be pleased to see it.

3. LOL! Not that any answer would satisfy you...
Birth Control: Clinton co-sponsored the Prevention First legislation in the senate and has long advocated for strengthening access to contraception, identifying realistic solutions to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, and improving access to women's health care. Clinton continues to champion increased funding for Title X family planning services, and insuring equitable insurance coverage for contraception, and has introduced new legislation to ensure Medicaid coverage of contraception for low-income women.

Emergency Contraception (EC): Clinton led the fight, along with Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to force the Food and Drug Administration to allow emergency contraception to be sold in pharmacies without a doctor's prescription, increasing its accessibility for emergency use. Senator Clinton also supported legislation to create, expand and fund teen pregnancy prevention programs and education programs that would include access to emergency contraceptives.

Abortion: Senator Clinton's votes have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to a woman's right to safe, legal abortion, while at the same time working on programs to reduce the number of unintended and unwanted pregnancies.

Abortion Procedures Ban: Clinton voted both times against the federal abortion procedures ban; the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of that ban because of Alito's confirmation.

Young Women's Access: Clinton opposed a bill that would have made sisters, aunts, grandmothers, counselors, religious advisors -- indeed anyone who assists a minor in crossing the state line for an abortion without parental consent -- a felon. She actively campaigned against requiring parental notification for teen abortion, saying it would "put our most vulnerable teens at risk — teens who may already be endangered by negligent or even abusive homes."
Advancing Economic Justice

On every issue that affects the economic status of women and girls, Senator Clinton has advocated for a safer and more secure future.

Pay Equity: Clinton has supported and is the lead sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act. She has a robust track record promoting women's educational advancement and equality in the workplace.

Minimum Wage: Clinton has supported raising the minimum wage every time it has come up in Congress and understands that it is a fairness, anti-poverty and women's rights issue.

Overtime: Clinton was a leader in our fight to prevent the Department of Labor from undermining overtime protections for low-income workers, mostly women.

Work/Family Balance: Clinton supports early childhood education, universal availability of childcare for all, paid sick and family leave and policies that recognize the dual roles of workers who are parents and caregivers.

Social Security: Clinton opposes privatizing Social Security and recognizes that this social program is essential to economic security and livelihood of women and families.

Domestic Partner Benefits: Clinton supports the extension of job benefits, and indeed all of the federal benefits available to married couples, to committed same-sex partners, "nothing left out."

Immigration: Clinton supports allowing undocumented immigrants and guest workers a path to citizenship and participation in Social Security. She is promoting healthcare for immigrant children as part of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Budget and Taxes: Clinton supports funding for human needs programs that are vital to struggling families and opposes billion dollar tax giveaways to the wealthy. She opposes making the Bush tax cuts permanent, and has proposed that they be rolled back.

35. Not a bad answer but many are not specific as to "women"
And she seems way too interested in"realistic" prevention as opposed to the protection of the unlimited right to choice. Who gets to make that determination as to what is "realistic". That is trangulation for sure. Her best vote appears to be on the Young Women's Access. and Emergency Contraception. The other bills were not woman specific.I still don't like that she continues to uphold a pharmacist's right to refuse to write a prescription for religious reasons.

61. I think she softens her support of choice with placing more emphasis on prevention.
Prevention is fine but choice should be "unlimited" and she is fixted on "safe , legal and rare".That is the bone she throws the RW.I don't care for the subtle implication that abortion is "wrong" and not a right. She does NOT kick butt hands down.On the surface her legislation looks okay but much of it, while progressive, is only indirectly about women. There are many issues directly pertaining to women that can effect no one else that she could have taken the lead on and she has not done so.

57. Please provide a definition for the word "TRIANGULATION"?
Or at the very least, your definition of the word. I can't tell you how sick and tired I am of people throwing that word around as an escape for a real response because the word Triangulation denotes a negative connotation by inference in a sentence.

Also, please spell out how Triangulation is effectuated in this sentence:

"And she seems way too interested in"realistic" prevention as opposed to the protection of the unlimited right to choice.
Who gets to make that determination as to what is "realistic".

What have you done for civil rights?

What have you done for gay rights?

What have you done for anyone?

It is about how you live your life. What each of us does for others. How we love. How we care.

17. She also co-sponsored legislation to free police officers from having to defend abortion clinics
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 11:39 PM by PurityOfEssence
or require pharmacists to fill birth-control prescriptions if their religion didn't cotton to it. This is a fun bill co-sponsored by everybody's friend Rick Santorum called the "Workplace Religious Freedom Act". Hiding behind the beauty of religious freedom, she is thus advocating allowing police officers to ignore their duty of protecting citizens from harm and facilitating pharmacists who want to force their religious beliefs on others, even when it involves their health.

She's also an ardent supporter of faith-based organizations, and has been quoted as calling for politicians to "inject faith into policy". I'll start a thread on this later, so sorry to bore you all with this pre-peat.

Her principal talent is self-preservation.

Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 12:06 AM by Jim Sagle
Let's vote for Hil so she can preserve herself in office while the House and Senate revert to Republicanism. We did it before with Bill, we can do it again with Hil.

What do WE get out of it? More war, more outsourcing, more religion in civic politics, and more face time for Carville and Begala to tell us we never had it so good. What's not to like?

28. Upon researching, Edwards apparently co-sponsored this bill too
In all fairness, this should be noted, and I just learned it by doing some belated research. This is a bill that keeps being reintroduced, so I don't know if the incarnations he supported also attempted to ensure the freedom of police and pharmacists from performing their duties. I will see what's out there, and would appreciate any info.

I don't know how he's responded to any challenges on this part of the act, but I do know that women's groups have brought pressure to bear on Hillary over the police and pharmacist issues to no avail.

Ensuring religious freedom is a fine thing and part of Article One of the Bill of Rights, but if it protects people in the act of refusing to do their jobs when lives are at risk, it's gone too far.

Edwards has been very specific and vocal about championing the separation of church and state, as anyone who listened to Logo forum will remember.

67. Untwist it
The bill Hillary cosponsored was aimed at allowing, where practical, employees to get leave for religious holidays or to wear beards at work, or things of that nature. Since the civil rights act of 1964 employers have been required to make reasonable accommodations. The bill Hillary cosponsored changed some definitions of the law to provide greater protections for employees.

In addition to Hillary, the bill was also cosponsored by John Kerry and Chuck Schumer.

The idea that Hillary sponsored a bill to "to free police officers from having to defend abortion clinics or require pharmacists to fill birth-control prescriptions" comes from a campaign by the ACLU that warned that if the bill passed and the courts ruled with an unforeseen interpretation, those types of cases could be upheld. ACLU based those examples on religious freedom rights cases that were REJECTED by the courts under the previous (and I believe current)law.

The ACLU and PFLAG supported the bill but asked that it be amended to either specify the situations where it would apply or else create exemptions that would protect women seeking abortions, gays, etc.

I don't think the bill ever passed.

The statement, "Hiding behind the beauty of religious freedom, she is thus advocating allowing police officers to ignore their duty of protecting citizens from harm and facilitating pharmacists who want to force their religious beliefs on others, even when it involves their health," is so misleading that it rises to the level of a complete falsehood.

18. Thanks.
I have known about Hillary's career and her advocacy for children and women since the 60s. I have several female friends that are law professors. Most of these women were in the first (some second class) of females that were admitted to law school. Sadly, all of these women from across the country knew each other and followed each other's careers because it was such a small group. For all of them Hillary was their hero. Actually they would say shero.

I feel fortunate to have followed Hillary's life from her early days; before Scaiffe went after her with his Arkansas Project in an effort to try and ruin her (and Bill) personally and professionally. I honestly don't know how she has kept going. Many times when I read some of the stuff that is written about her, both here and in the media, I think that we really don't deserve her.

I am grateful that she continues to carry the message of the importance of public service. Maybe a younger generation will be inspired and empowered.

Recently I was asked by a young friend to describe Hillary in one word. My immediate response was - grace.

He looked at me and said - Huh? I responded - you know... as in always courteous, considerate, thoughtful. We discussed her a little more and the unrelenting attacks on her and then he asked me "How does she do it"? I told him I honestly don't know but we are all better for it, even those who hate her.

Unless you think giving Bush permission to attack Iraq was good judgement.

Obama has loads of high-caliber life experience too (46 years of it), but he has something even better: good judgment.

It's a shame Hillary didn't uphold the powers granted the legislative branch in issues of war and peace. I pity the students who were in her constitutional law class. Or did she just forget what she had learned?

In other words, you missed that point and the larger point I was making in the other thread entirely, and have failed despite your best efforts to prove that Hillary Clinton's life experience is better preparation for the Presidency than Obama's or anyone else's (a pointless quest, because it's a subjective question). More importantly, you aren't even bothering to address issues of judgment and character.

We don't choose Presidents for the reasons your are arguing we should choose Hillary. Character and judgment are more than a laundry list, and character, common sense, and good judgment trump experience everyday. And even if they didn't, the fact remains that neither Obama or Clinton have any previous job experience remotely similar to the job they are seeking. To pretend otherwise is to delude oneself.

she will fuck everyone over equally and then get a job with the carlyle group, the tenure at wal-mart is that what makes her special or is it the murdock thing. Sorry I bet she's a nice person lacks real leadership seems selfish to me. She weakened the democratic party by starting her campaign so early which caused three democratic senators to follow.

Hillary Clinton lacks experience.

Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 08:00 PM by calteacherguy
She lacks the necessary experience in community organizing, growing up as a minority, living in a foreign culture, constitutional scholarhip and teaching, and forcefully opposing the worst foreign policy blunder in American history. Additionaly, she participated in unwisely ceeding important constitutional powers of the legislative branch to the President.

It is a President's duty first and formost to defend the constitution of the United States. She just isn't experienced enough to be President.

36. Voted for free trade with Singapore and Chile, confirmed Rice, Negroponte and Chertoff
I don't know how much was known about Chertoff before his confirmation, but Negroponte was VERY well known as a death-squad orchestrator from the Regan Central America Wars, and Rice had shown herself to be a bald-faced (and just terrible) liar when NSA chief, as well as inept at best; what possessed Ms. Clinton to confirm these last two deserves a few answers.

It's also to be noted that Edwards voted against the free-trade bills with both Singapore and Chile. (The confirmation votes were after his tenure.)

37. Any other person with Hill's level of experience and qualifications would be praised for their
willingness to take on the task of the presidency.

Sadly, Hill's positives are brushed aside by the "one issue robots" in the Dem party who are so blinded with Hillary-hate that they would "throw the baby out with the bathwater" without a second thought.

51. And, since then, said "neophyte" has outflanked your girl on
-Pakistan
-Cuba
-Use/non-use of nukes (making blanket statements/for and against, depending on the day)
-Talking to bad and evil men (which she is for and against, depending on the day)

And avoided the following verbal screw-ups which will be used agaisnt her if we mistakenly nominate her:

-The surge (It's working, no it's not)
-We are safer (not as safe as we need to be, but we are safer...hence the Republicans' automatic political advantage in the event of a terorrist attack :freak:).
-Speculating on the political implications of a hypothetical terrorist attack.

Looks like either Obama knows what he's doing or he's got the better consultants.

It seems more logical, since Obama wants to work with the Republicans, that his supporters would switch to the GOP if he loses the nomination so they can carry out his dream (since "progressives" hate Democrats so much.)

I couldn't vote for her.
Two former instructors of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (SOA/WHINSEC) are among the thirteen. Colonel Quijano, a former commander of Colombia’s Special Forces, and Major Mora Daza, taught “peacekeeping operations” and “democratic sustainment” at WHINSEC in 2003-2004.

Over HALF of the thirteen military officials implicated in the drug cartel protection ring attended the U.S. Army School of the Americas and/or its successor institute, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.
