Fire Fighters union endorsing Dodd

The Politico's Ben Smith has news of the International Association of Fire Fighters' impending endorsement of Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT)

That means the Firefighters, the first union to endorse Sen. John Kerry in 2004, won't endorse Hillary Clinton or Bill Richardson, two reliable allies.

Dodd, meanwhile, gets a major boost, particularly in New Hampshire, where the Firefighters union takes politics seriously and provides serious help to its endorsed candidate on primary day.

Why Dodd? No official word yet, but it's probably because the IAFF could not ignore his long Senate history of providing tangible political and material benefits to its members.

1. Good for Dodd!
The Firefighters do a good ground game politically.

2. They turned the Iowa caucuses for Kerry.
They showed up en masse on caucus night for Kerry and they were the key factor in his victory here. Good news for Dodd.

5. Dodd and Biden
were the only ones to get standing ovations at IAFF's 2008 presidential forum. Dodd is highly underrated.

8. He also has an environmental plan that Kerry said nice things about
- which means a lot - given that none of the top candidates have credentials like Gore's or his.

7. Great endorsement - they really did help Kerry in 2004
I recently saw this film that the Massachusetts firefighters made that showed why they backed Kerry. I never saw it in 2004 - and from it I can see why they picked him very very early and stayed with him even when he was tied with Sharpton. (It really is sad that Kerry doesn't blow his own horn about some of the classy things he has done.)

In a 2004 article I read that Kerry got money for one of the Worcester colleges to develop devices that could locate quickly where a fire fighter was in that type of situation to avoid the type of tragedy here and that Kerry particaptaed in charity ice hockey to raise money - but I never saw this.

9. Good for Dodd - he worked for that endorsement
I hope this takes away the argument of Top Tier and makes the MSM look at ALL the candidates.
