WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain is clinging to a slim and shrinking lead over his Republican rivals for the White House in his home state, an Arizona poll released Tuesday indicates.
McCain drew support from 24 percent of registered Republicans in the Cronkite-Eight Poll, beating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who had 19 percent, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, with 18 percent, and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, with 17 percent.
Thompson, an undeclared candidate, is expected to announce his campaign next month.
McCain's support has been nearly cut in half since February, when he led the field in Arizona with 44 percent. The plunge in his home state mirrors McCain's slide nationwide, as he has struggled to raise money and generate campaign momentum since the spring.
His lead over Romney, who is paying a lot of attention to Arizona, is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for the Republican nomination. The poll, conducted Aug. 23-26, surveyed 738 registered voters.
