Conyers: Impeachment off Pelosi's table, but not mine Nick Juliano
Published: Wednesday August 29, 2007

Rep. John Conyers declared House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could not stop him from beginning impeachment proceedings in the House Judiciary Committee against a 'long list of people'in the Bush administration, although he did not make a firm commitment to begin proceedings.

"Nancy Pelosi has impeachment 'off the table,' but that's off her table, it is not off John Conyers' table," the Michigan Democrat said during a town hall meeting in his district Tuesday. "Nancy Pelosi, who I actually supported, cannot prevent me from introducing an impeachment resolution against, well I've got a long list of people who are eligible."

One of the biggest hurdles to the impeachment was an AG that basically did what Bush told him to do. Now that Gonzales is gone the path is cleared to get the impeachment started. Why do you think that Conyers waited until now to say this

1. It seems like Conyers is also trying to drum up more public support....
for impeachment. Without that support, politically he may determine it is not wise to proceed even without Gonzales' roadblocks.

2. Good for you, Mr. Conyers
Let's get some hearings going, start gathering evidence, and make the case. I think the American people are receptive to the idea (if not out in front of it). Our leaders will catch up if the people start getting too far ahead of them.

3. Go, John, Go! I so want to like Conyers again.
His reluctance to do his job has really made me back away from him.

I'm glad to hear he still has his own mind, and is not ignoring the oath he took, and his obligation to his constituents. John Conyers could very well turn out to be the hero we've been looking for.

I'm going to try not to get too excited about this, because it could just lead to yet another let down by the Dems, but this is the best news on this subject that I've heard in a long time.

DO IT, JOHN! IMPEACH!! JUSTICE DEMANDS IT!!!

6. I really think it has to do with the AG
If I'm correct the AG is involved somehow in the impeachment. Janet Reno was every bit impartial during Clinton's impeachment whereas you know Gonzales would have stone-walled impeachment every step of the way. That's why both the Senate and House were going gung-ho with trying to get rid of Gonzales. This major hurdle is cleared and now is the time to push impeachment

4. "I only wish that I could be moved by a lot of people coming to my office."
Conyers did not announce plans to begin impeachment proceedings, which he has previously said would be politically untenable. Rather, his speech seemed to indicate that pro-impeachment activists did not yet convince him that Bush and Cheney deserved to be booted from office. A Conyers spokesman did not immediately respond to RAW STORY's request for clarification of the congressman's comments.

"I want you to know that I have no reticence, no reluctance, no hesitation to use the tool of impeachment ... whenever I feel that it is appropriate," Conyers said. "I only wish that I could be moved by a lot of people coming to my office."

One activist who helped organize hundreds of protesters who traveled to Washington to push Conyers to begin impeachment remains unconvinced that the congressman will actually take action.

"I think John Conyers ... is saying, 'I'm not going to d

5. All aboard! We're Taking the Impeachment Train!
It could get done in a couple months and we get to have our Constitution back in the process.

7. Of course, she can't
I don't know why people think she can just order House dems to do what she wants.

8. I hope the nail-biters, cowards and traitors over at the DLC dont get in his way too much.
And yes- I said traitors. I for one have not forgotten how they continued to support Joe Lieberman (I)- its no wonder that they also oppose impeachment or anything else that involves fighting conservatives.

That goes for the non-DLC conservat...er-I mean "centrists" who always oppose fighting Bush as well.

12. Anyone else getting tired of his act?
I've come to the conclusion he is all talk and no action. He talks like he is going to do something for headlines and limelights, but after the cameras are gone and reporters are gone, NOTHING.

Enough talk Conyers. If you are going to do something, DO IT. If not, shut up. It's getting old.

13. Thanks for saying that...
I'm amazed at how foolishly optimistic some DUers are on issues like this. John Conyers is pulling their legs, and they think he's "waiting" for the right moment. When lives are on the line at home and abroad, the time to act is NOW -- not when politically convenient.
