How will it work? Does a Dem have a chance?

5. I don't think so
The last Democrat to represent Idaho in the senate was Frank Church, right?

9. And what a GREAT senator Frank Church was - wow!
Edited on Thu Aug-30-07 01:45 AM by democrat2thecore
I remember when he ran for president in '76. I was for either Fred Harris (probably the most progressive senator to sit in the U.S. Senate - I volunteered a little for him) or Frank Church. Harris made some waves, but neither caught on. It was Carter's year.

11. Can somebody explain how Idaho elected someone like Church in the first place?
How could things have changed so much since his day?

6. If he simply resigns
The Idaho Governor can appoint a Senator until the next election.

That's how I think it's done.

I assume the Idaho Governor is a Republican.

8. A Dem has no chance in Idaho, but... if Craig doesn't resign it could be interesting
IMO Larry Grant the guy who ran against Bill Sali last time would be a better choice than LaRacco. Regardless if either of them runs against Craig it may force the NRSC to spend money in Idaho and that's a serious problem for them.

The ONLY Democrat that could possibly pull off a win is Cecil Andrus and I have to wonder if the DSCC might be trying to persuade him to come out of retirement.

13. He's 76, do you think he'd go for it?
Cecil Dale Andrus (born August 25, 1931) is a former United States Secretary of the Interior and Democratic Governor of Idaho. He served a combined 14 years as governor (1971-1977 and 1987-1995) and as Interior secretary during the Jimmy Carter Administration. Andrus served as governor longer than anyone else in Idaho history. In public life he was noted for his environmentalist views.

14. Incredibly unlikely, but I can dream
Mondale did ran when he was 74. I don't think his age would prevent him from running but I think it's more a question of what he wants to do with the time he has left, at least that's what I would be thinking at that age. If I was enjoying retirement and wanted to spend my remaining years with my family and such then I absolutely wouldn't run. On the other hand, if I weren't particularly happy with retirement (and many politicians are not) and wanted to get back into public life, there would probably be no better opportunity than this.
