Because religion informs culture and values, which inevitably shape political life. Still, many of the accomplishments of civilization derive from separating the two. It's no accident that the Founders and other Enlightenment types are essentially free-thinkers, concerned with the rational organization of society towards the happiness of individuals. Religion in politics, by contrast, leads to grand causes, milleniarism, absolutist ideologies--all forces more or less naturally opposed to the right of the individual to live for his own welfare in peace and liberty.
