Virginia Senator John Warner to announce Friday whether he'll run again
http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=131450&ran=8079

from the article:

U.S. Sen. John Warner, whose future plans have been the best-kept secret in Virginia politics for nearly a year, apparently will announce Friday whether he intends to retire or seek a sixth term,

The 80-year-old Republican has scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. outside the historic rotunda at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville to discuss his decision. Warner is a U.Va. law school graduate.

3. That would be my conclusion as well..
I think he realizes now that Bush is at best seriously delusional at worst profoundly mentally ill and will never see reason

6. Say what you want about John Warner he is very pro troops ...
... and he knows that the war in Iraq is a f***ing mistake and that
we are stuck in the middle of a 1200 year old civil feud and we have
to get out ASAP.

Plus he is 80 too.

8. I agree...
I just wish he would have spoken out sooner. I guess he thought Bush would eventually come around, or maybe by some miracle things would improve?

9. Warner knows that bush is either stupid or nuts by now.
The speed @ which bush rejected the Iraq Study Group's report
and Warner's own understanding of Iraq makes me think that
Warner is going to work to get us out of Iraq and he can do that better
not running.

11. If he was going to retire, why the Big Announcement?
Wouldn't that mean he was going to run?

I'm just thinking we have no idea what he's going to do and will have to wait until 2 PM tomorrow, because there are arguments for both scenarios.

12. I thought the same thing, but maybe the Va. GOP wants
it to be the official kick-off for the Tom Davis-Jim Gilmore primary bloodfest  It will $tart their campaigns for sure.

13. You got it
John Warner is still a Republican, even if he thinks his titular
party head should reside in a padded cell rather than the oval office.

If he wants to retire and give his party a ghost of a chance to hold on
to his seat, he announces his retirement sooner rather later.

On the other hand, if he wants to retain his seat, he'll want to head off
any potential opposition from within his party as early as possible so as
not to have to campaign in the primaries. Eighty years old is still eighty
years old.

I tend to think he is not running, but would not yet bet money on it.
