With Letterman, Hillary Jokes Bill Looked Into No. 2 Job
NYT/AP: Hillary Jokes Bill Looked Into No. 2 Job
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: August 31, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton has already had to forgo one potential running mate -- her husband. Asked by talk-show host David Letterman if Bill Clinton could serve as her vice president should she be elected to the White House, the former first lady acknowledged that he could not. ''Believe me,'' she joked, ''he looked into that.'' She also remarked that if the Constitution didn't forbid a president from a third term, ''he might be running.''

Such easy banter marked Clinton's seventh appearance on ''The Late Show,'' which was celebrating its 14th anniversary on CBS. She first appeared on Feb. 14, 1994, when Letterman's mother, Dorothy, interviewed her briefly from the Winter Olympics in Norway.

On Thursday's show, Clinton recounted a summer in Alaska during which she donned boots and an apron to gut salmon with a spoon. ''Best preparation for being in Washington that you can possibly imagine,'' she joked.

Clinton talked shop, too, discussing the need for campaign finance reform, how to pull troops out of Iraq and the importance of caring for wounded veterans. She said that while resistance to a female commander in chief has diminished, it hasn't disappeared. ''I think it's not so much that people don't think a woman can do the job, it's just that we've never done it before,'' she said. ''I'm not running because I'm a woman; I'm running because I think I'm the best-qualified and experienced person who can do the job. But I know that it's a big deal that I might be the first woman president.''

Clinton also read a ''Top Ten List'' of tongue-in-cheek campaign promises, including No. 3: ''We will finally have a president who doesn't mind pulling over and asking for directions.''

1. Al Franken says Bill Clinton *CAN* be Vice President, and, in fact...
can also be President again for a maximum of 2 years.

2. Stories like this just prove people are only considering voting for HRC because she's "Mrs." Clinton
not "Senator" Clinton. I'm convinced the only reason she's ahead in the polls at all is because people see her as "Billary", not "Hillary".

7. Hillary does an outstanding job on Letterman ALL BY HERSELF
and you still have people who claim "it's all Bill!!" What ignorance.

8. We're not saying "it's ALL Bill"
We are saying Bill was a great man in the office of President, and Hillary certainly is benefitting in the polls from that factor. Hillary is an intelligent woman, a good politician, a caring human being, and likely a great Senator. But she didn't get to be the front-runner in some polls for the next Democratic Presidential candidate simply because of her qualities in all those many areas. She got there PARTLY because she married Bill Clinton. She's there and we're not going to complain, but we are going to look at ALL of the facts as to why she is where she is.

10. Then why do her poll numbers go up after every debate?
By your logic, if she is where she is because of Bill, then she's obviousley not as talented/qualified as the other candidates. Yet she wipes the floor with them in every single debate, and her poll numbers reflect that.

11. Simple question...
If she is our nominee, will you vote for her in the general election?

14. Al Franken is wrong.
Bill cannot be President or VP for 2 years or 2 minutes. He is not eligible for either office.

16. Actually, Franken was joking...
... but the possibility is not correct.

Twenty second amendment:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

This doesn't seem to slam the door on Clinton. For that, you have to refer to the Twelfth Amendment:

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

So, Bill cannot run for Vice President.

15. He'd have to pull a Cheney...
and claim residence in a different state than Hillary. The Constitution prohibits Pres & Veep being from the same state. Cheney got around this by claiming Wyoming residency, even though he lived in Texas.
