FBI spied on King's widow for years

Newly released documents show that FBI agents spied on the widow of Martin Luther King for several years after he was shot dead in 1968.

The documents, which include an intercepted letter written by Coretta Scott King and various memos sent to FBI headquarters, reveal federal agents' fears that Ms Scott King would continue the work of her late husband. That she could try "to tie the anti-Vietnam movement to the civil rights movement" was of particular concern.

After tailing her movements for four years, the government closed its file on Coretta Scott King with a statement that "no information has come to the attention of Atlanta which indicates a propensity for violence or affiliation of subversive elements."

Secret Database Obtained by NBC News Tracks ‘Suspicious’ Domestic Groups

"Some people never learn,” he says. During the Vietnam War, Pyle blew the whistle on the Defense Department for monitoring and infiltrating anti-war and civil rights protests when he published an article in the Washington Monthly in January 1970.

The public was outraged and a lengthy congressional investigation followed that revealed that the military had conducted investigations on at least 100,000 American citizens. Pyle got more than 100 military agents to testify that they had been ordered to spy on U.S. citizens — many of them anti-war protestors and civil rights advocates. In the wake of the investigations, Pyle helped Congress write a law placing new limits on military spying inside the U.S.

But Pyle, now a professor at Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts, says some of the information in the database suggests the military may be dangerously close to repeating its past mistakes. "

3. K&R. This is about as dispicable a thing as there is. It absolutely
destroys ones belief in freedom, privacy and a whole host of rights supposedly guaranteed by the Constitution. MLK was murdered by the CIA or the FBI I have no doubt now, nor any doubt that the Kennedy's were murdered by them too.

What sickens me is that in looking back at true history I have a persistent hostility on the part of the Intelligence Community toward people simply exercising their civil rights. MLK's grandfather was harrassed by the Military Intelligence Division in the 20's.
