Massachusetts Rep. James McGovern: The Battle Over War Funding Can't Wait
McGovern says he’ll fight war funding bill in the House

By John J. Monahan TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern says he won’t wait until mid-September for a report from President Bush and General David Petraeus, to declare the recent military surge in Iraq a failure. Instead, he will seek agreement next week to block future war funding until the White House delivers a plan to end the war.

(snip)

But anticipating that the president will attempt to postpone an end to the war, Mr. McGovern said he will go to the House floor Tuesday to seek support for an approach that would prevent consideration of $50 billion in new emergency funds for the troops until the White House offers a withdrawal plan.

“This debate needs to begin immediately. When we come back Tuesday, we need to be on the House floor, talking about ending this war,” he said. “The president already said he is going to request an additional $50 billion for this war in Iraq and I am going to oppose that very vigorously.”

(snip)

“This president has been irrational when it comes to the war,” he said. “This president has turned his back on all the facts and all the advice that has come from many of our military leaders in Iraq.” The president has also failed to engage leaders of other countries to come up with a diplomatic solution, he said.

Mr. McGovern added that he expects the president to try to push the war into next year and pass the problem on to the next president. He will try to “peel off” enough Democrat opponents to avoid planning for an end to the war.

Gotta love the synchronicity.

5. I think his position on this is right on the money, and a lot of Mass. electeds
have endorsed Hillary. It doesn't mean I think he's right about that just because he's right about the war needing to be over. And, it certainly doesn't mean I will vote for Hillary just because a lot of our electeds are.

P.S. -- Elmer: I have a question for you -- totally unrelated -- but it is about Hillary. Is it seen to be okay to refer to her as "Hillary" now? There was such controversy at the beginning, even though that's how she referred to herself, about it being sexist to do so. So, I started calling her "Mrs. Clinton", but that was seens as disrespectful because she's a Senator, so I'm finally referring to her as Senator Clinton or HRC, and I see you are referring to her as Hillary. Is it okay or not okay? Or is it only okay if you support her? It's so confusing.

6. As far as I am concerned Hillary is fine...
I think it is a term of affection among her supporters...she uses that in all her campaign literature. And though I do not have any affiliation with the campaign, I have friends who are, and they have all been told that calling her Hillary is just fine...

so my $.02

As to Jim McGovern, I actually went to college with him. He was Prez of the College Democrats on campus. My point wasn't that people should automatically support Hillary simply because McGovern does, but just that if a person with anti-war credentials as strong as his supports Hillary, perhaps taking a step back and looking at her actual positions and her plans might be warranted. He is supporting her largely on his belief that she is the best qualified to get us out of there safely...
