Clooney On "Rock Star" Obama: "He Walks Into The World, And He Takes Your Breath Away"
VENICE, Italy — Barack Obama has the aura of a rock star, says George Clooney, who also had some kind words for other Democratic presidential candidates.

"You've been in a room once in a while with a rock star. He walks into the world, and he takes your breath away. I'd love him to be president, quite honestly," the actor told reporters Friday at the Venice Film Festival, where his legal thriller "Michael Clayton" was premiering.

Clooney, who banked a check for Obama at a private $1.3 million fundraiser in Beverly Hills last February, praised the U.S. senator for speaking out early against the Iraq war.

But with more than a year until the election, Clooney also said he liked Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Sen. John Edwards _ and pondered whether former Vice President Al Gore might vie for the presidency again. "It could be interesting," he said.

The politics of war was in the air at Venice, with two U.S. films competing for the Golden Lion dealing with the impact of the Iraq conflict.

Clooney _ who said he made "Syriana" and "Good Night, and Good Luck," out of anger that he was labeled a traitor for questioning the decision to go to war _ told reporters he thinks change is coming.

He said he believes Americans are now in the process of fixing the mistakes of the last few years.

3. Either in 2009 or later
Depending upon the Hillary supporters, who seem to not want to consider him ready for prime time!
I think he's wonderfully intelligent, has tremendous insight about the world and the problems of this nation, and I hope we can convince enough people who seem to want to vote for Hillary or Edwards to vote for Obama instead. But that seems to be a steep hill to climb.

4. A great example for us .....
"But with more than a year until the election, Clooney also said he liked Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Sen. John Edwards _ and pondered whether former Vice President Al Gore might vie for the presidency again. "It could be interesting," he said."

I too like all the candidates. Some more than others, but, on the whole; I will vote for any of them ....

Clooney's is a voice of reason ...... I would advise heeding that voice ....

5. I wouldn't say "rock star"...
But he does have something that makes me feel better about the future. I'm going to a rally Monday with Obama--I've seen him before but he does have that magnetism that makes you want to stay and listen some more.

6. Yeah, calling him a "rock star" kind of trivializes him
He's much more than a rock star.

9. Yeah, because the only thing above a rock star is a god
:eyes:

My point was that calling him a "rock star" just makes him out to be some celebrity when he's actually a serious Presidential candidate.

34. So why don't we just nominate a rock star?
Ozzy is the most electable, but he's not an American. Kid Rock and Dave Mustaine are Republicans. Elvis is dead. So maybe our best hope lies with Eminem.

10. Clooney and Damon are going to Oprah's party. and Clooney is right
How else do you describe the fact that everywhere he goes people are cheering and even screaming. people pack in and many end up being turned away because they pack in like sardines just to hear him. they cannot hold the amount of people who come to see him.
I even have seen videos of some of his rallies where people are crying when he arrives.
How else do you describe this phenomenon but, rock star.

14. Last I heard, genius' like Einstein are above Rock star status...not God!
Rock stars have a hyper shortened shelf life. There are exceptions of course. A serious Rock star that comes to mind is Bill Clinton, the exception to the rule. But then again he's been around forever, has proven himself time and time again, and is not a media creation, like some.

Edited on Mon Sep-03-07 05:02 PM by loyalsister
Who used that description? I remember reading it somewhere about Bill Clinton when he went on MTV.
It's one thing to have charisma on a personal basis. To throw it around publicly or on a stage is another.
By all accounts Obama shows his Elvis naturally and pretty shamelessly.

I like his words...the same words used by my pastor when he's preaching to the congregation..I don't see Obama as presidential.

As far as Clooney, he's a gambler extraordinarie, he's hedging his bet.. He likes Hillary too and smart to say so!

They're is a statistical dead heat..

Poll numbers can change and often do. Being too sure of yourself is a mistake in politics.

and when Edwards loses Iowa to Hillary, he'll have to drop out and his supporters will go to Obama. :hi:

18. before everyone gets all warm and mushy over Barack
remember, Republicans thought the same thing when they saw Reagan and W speaking and meeting in person as well. Infatuation and emotions are one thing, but it can not replace rationale thinking. Vote for him/her/whomever if you think they'll do a good job, not because he makes you tingle.

22. "Takes your breath away?" A little over the top isn't it?
This isn't how I felt when I first saw him speak. He did create a lot of excitement....but then again, there were buses full of supporters from Illinois who also helped with that.

With that said, Obama is my second choice. Not because he is a 'rock star' or 'takes my breath away' though.

27. I love the G. Cloons but I don't buy this near worship at times,of Obama or anyone else.
I find it a little scary,to be honest.

We had a poster here the other day say that we need to let Obama "fulfill his destiny".It reminds of the those people who still love Bush and have that creepy, glazed look in their eyes.Out of all the candidates Obama seems to have that cult of personality going the most (though that does mean that he at least HAS a personality I suppose. :) )
