Democrats don't have the guts to END the war
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 01:07 AM by illinoisprogressive
In nine words: Democrats don't have the guts to end the war!

The deadly phrase "Bush-Cheney Light" was used a couple of weeks ago by Sen. Barack Obama to attack Sen. Hillary Clinton and other establishment Democrats for essentially endorsing the war more gracefully than "Bring 'em on!" Republicans such as the president and vice president. Obama may have been less than polite, but he was right.

So there it is. Why not vote for Republicans who, ignorantly or stupidly or evilly, or in some cases all three, actually believe in what they are saying and doing? In private, back there on Capitol Hill, Democrats are saying, "These people are destroying the country, and we have to do something about it."

Actually this administration, to the dismay of many Republicans on that same sheltered hill, are destroying two countries, Iraq and the United States. But Democrats are refusing to say that or really trying to do anything about it. The Democrats are also, not so incidentally, living in the future, spending their time and energy campaigning for 2008 rather than governing in 2007 - which is one of the reasons the Republicans, whoever they nominate, may end up holding on to the White House for another four years.

I'm tempted to say that neither side knows what it is doing, but that is not actually true. The folks in the White House now are too dumb and too stubborn to know, and the Democrats are too chicken to say what they believe.

The two parties, though, do share one dirty little conviction: They both think the American people are uninformed morons. The Republicans think people are stupid enough to think we are winning this war. The Democrats think people are stupid enough to think they are actually against the war. In a just world, both parties would lose in 2008.

1. Absolutely true, that subject line
"Winning" in Iraq would require 750,000 or so troops on the ground in Iraq doing occupation duty for the next ten to 20 years. That would require:

  • Drafting 750,000 young men and women a year to keep up the combat rotations

  • Nationalization of some, most, or all of the military-industrial complex

  • War taxes

  • Rationing

There are probably a few other things I'm missing. But you get the idea.

Democrats don't have the guts to ask that of the American people.

Republicans don't have the guts to ask that of the American people, either.

Only one side will admit it, however. The other side is living in denial while money and soldiers flow to Iraq and corpses and shattered lives flow back.

only if because we shouldn't have gone there in the first place.

My fear of Hillary is that her DLC ties will allow herself to be convinced to stay.

7. So true
"The Democrats are also, not so incidentally, living in the future, spending their time and energy campaigning for 2008 rather than governing in 2007"

This definately seems to be their strategy

8. I think it will drip on along until Bush is out. Frankly I think the Dem.
want it to stay Bush's war until they get in office and then stop it. It will not be the first time the people have been screwed by both parties for power.

9. There are some dems who do have the courage and
have been speaking out. Unfortunately, they're in the minority, and the the media ignores them.

13. Great question.
There are probably many factors, but I think the bottom line is that the power structure is in place to support those that already hold power, and to defeat those that threaten the status quo, and the power holders.

11. The dems want to have, at least, one more Iraq election
It worked well for them in 2006. they think they can still pin it on shrub and the pubs. they would only end it if it would help them politically. they could have already, they could end it in Sept. but, they won't. It is such a mess, and we're so entrenched in Iraq, we're not leaving anytime soon. How many permenant military bases? the world's largest embassy. we'll be there for 10+ years to be sure.

Iraq is the wedge issue for the dems. they like to run and win with it, but if they actually ended the occupation, they would lose thier platform.

Until they feel that their jobs and thier power are at risk, they won't change.
