The Clinton show hits New Hampshire

The Clintons in New Hampshire Sunday

(CNN)–Returning to the state where he was dubbed the 'Comeback Kid' in 1992, former President Bill Clinton began a Labor Day weekend campaign swing through New Hampshire with his wife, New York Senator Hillary Clinton as she campaigned for her White House bid. Standing before a crowd on the lawn of the state capitol in Concord, the former president said the 2008 election was consequential. "We have to elect the best President this time. This is not about politics, this is about the future."

He declined to criticize any of his wife's competitors for the Democratic nomination. "I like being a Democrat in this election because I like all the people running. So if you came here expecting me to say something bad about the others, you might as well go home now," he said to a comment greeted by laughter from the crowd. But he left no real doubt for whom he would cast his vote. "In the forty years I have been voting in presidential elections," he said, "Hillary is the best prepared to be president of any non-incumbent I ever had a chance to vote for in my life."

"Ultimately, to bring change, you have to know when to stand your ground, and when to find common ground," Senator Clinton said after taking the stage. "You need to know when to stick to principles and fight, and know when to make principled compromises."

Under fire from other candidates for appearing too cozy with special interest groups, she said no other candidate had more experience fighting them like she did. "I've been standing up to special interests and taking all their incoming fire for 15 years," the Democrat from New York said. "And guess what, I'm still standing, and proud to fight every step of the way."

The Clintons were also scheduled to visit the Hopkinton state fair in Contoocook, New Hampshire on Sunday, as well as an evening rally in Portsmouth. They are scheduled to campaign together in Iowa on Monday.

4. "Obama and his wife are attack dogs
destroying the party"???? What a silly statement. This has been a very mild primary so far with probably the most aggressive attacks coming from Elizabeth Edwards and I am not convinced her attacks were all that aggressive.

7. I liked this quote of Hillarys'
"Ultimately, to bring change, you have to know when to stand your ground, and when to find common ground," Senator Clinton said after taking the stage. "You need to know when to stick to principles and fight, and know when to make principled compromises."

11. What she said is reality....
versus rhetoric about "change". In politics you sometimes have to make compromises, in a big diverse country such as ours.

13. I'll say this..
For a woman with a wonderful education Michelle Obama leaves me cold. She just doesn't relate well to the larger picture we're facing. She seems to be bound up with pettiness like.."Barack forget to put up the butter" and another anomalous comment.."If you can't run your own house, how do you expect to run the White House?" I say: HUH? What in the world are you talking about?

14. Also from Bill: "This electability thing is a canard; it doesn't amount to a hill of beans."
Edited on Mon Sep-03-07 09:29 AM by flpoljunkie
He must be trying to play down the latest Times poll of likely Iowa caucus goers which shows Hillary finishing last--with 12% electability--behind Bill Richardson's 16%. John Edwards came in first at 32%, followed closely by Obama at 30%.

19. Why? BC is saying the electabilty thing perpetuated by the GOP
is non-existent! Then you provided Times polls in a silly attempt to sell your point..

I then countered with a recent poll showing Hillary way ahead of the field...

All I can say to you IS:

<***BUSTED****>

21. Apology accepted..
Unless you're a political junkie, everyday people are not as attuned to the current status of the Clinton campaign. The subject need to be broached and I'm glad he brought it up. President Clinton reassuring potential voters, the meme is not only irrelevant but is totally dead. As evidenced by her continued lone front runner status.

23. In other words, 'The other candidates aren't any better than Hillary'
She has tried the same thing in the debates.

If all the the candidates are perceived as equal, she wins. I think this is a tactic used by her campaign, not a compliment to the other candidates.
