Edwards Statement on Reports of Rising Civilian Death Tolls in Iraq
Edwards Statement on Reports of Rising Civilian Death Tolls in Iraq
John Edwards for President
Sunday, September 2, 2007

----
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement regarding today’s news reports that civilian deaths in Iraq rose in August to their second-highest monthly total this year.

“Today we have further evidence that there appear to be two realities in Iraq: the harsh reality of worsening violence, more civilian deaths and the failure to achieve any political progress, and the rosy reality that President Bush and his cronies try to paint with baseless exaggerations. The fact is the surge isn’t working. Too many innocent Iraqi civilians and too many of our brave American soldiers are dying everyday. All because this president refuses to be straight with the American people.

“This isn't a political game – it's a war. The president needs to face the harsh reality his mistakes have helped create. And it’s time for Congress to have some backbone and put an end to it. That’s why I’ve made my position very clear, with respect to the president’s new funding request. We need a timeline for withdrawal and a focus on a comprehensive political solution that will stabilize the country.

“When Congress returns this week, their message to the Bush Administration must be clear and strong, without equivocation: no timetable, no funding. No excuses."

1. Ugh......Hippocrisy
"The president needs to face the harsh reality his mistakes have helped create."
Ugh, isn't Edwards ALSO part of the "creation" thing????? Edwards didn't stick around in Government to try to help fix the mess that he was also PART of creating. Hypocrisy A simple "I'm sorry doesn't cut it.

"And it’s time for Congress to have some backbone and put an end to it." Why didn't JE have the backbone to STAY in Congress and try to undue some of the damage he was part of creating????? No, he was too busy campaigning and planning to be POTUS to stick around and put his neck on the line trying to deal with the repercussions of his disastrous votes. Again.... Hypocrisy

2. So the co-sponsor of the Iraq War Resolution with Lieberman wants the war to end...

Being on the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2002 and seeing (if he was awake) that the Bush administration was cooking the evidence to go to Iraq, what does Edwards do? He decides to co-sponsor the Iraq War Resolution with Joe Lieberman and essentially gives Bush a free pass to attack Iraq unilaterally. His speeches were so venomous of Saddam and the need to strike that the White House posted them on their web site.

Now he has the intellectual fortitude to say "Too many innocent Iraqi civilians and too many of our brave American soldiers are dying everyday."

Thanks, John. Thanks for the war you helped start. We'll fix it, John. Stay away from the controls, John. You've done enough damage.
