Bush gives rise to a Neo-Know-Nothing Party |
|
The historical Know-Nothing party grew out of revulsion to the 19th century unchecked wave of immigration, particularly of Irish and Southern Europeans. Current Republican Know-Nothings are an even greater threat to American democracy than their ancestors were. The historical Know-Nothings got their name from their routine answer to inquiries about them that they knew nothing. The modern KN's are not content that they know nothing, they want to be sure that the rest of us remain mired in a similar level of ignorance. Examples of this include but are not limited to their: assault on evolution continued attacks on global warming and the science that supports it devotion to secrecy and the dismantling of the Freedom of Information Act support of further consolidation of ownership of broadcast media curtailment of distribution of information regarding contraception support of pseudo news outlets like Fox, the Washington Times and New York Post organized attempts to cow and silence academics use of "think tank' propaganda to create phony debates where no credible dispute exists Bush will eventually leave office but the fores behind him will continue to champion ignorance over science, faith over rationality and lies over the truth. We need to understand that the hold that Republicans have on America requires a misinformed and frightened electorate . An unshakable commitment to speak the truth to the American people as well as calling us to honor our better angels is the only thing that can save us from becoming an imperial, garrison state.
