My former - Republican Auntie takes on Homeland Security
God I love my aunt. She's 80+ and just returned home to Florida from her stay in Wisconsin. Talked to her this am and she was fit to be tied about airport security.

Yesterday, when leaving the Madison, WI airport, she told me she had her purse and a bottle of water in her carryon luggage. She said this 'excited' about 6 men in suits who approached her hands on hips and asked her if she had any liquids in her luggage.

She asked, 'why do you want to know'. She has a very formidable look when she's annoyed.

They stated that they had found the bottle of water in her carryon. She said - "Ooooooh. Better put that bottle in a large barrel of water just in case its a bomb."

She was quite incensed that they proceeded to 'pat her down' with her legs apart. She then went on to talk about why the hell Reid and Pelosi weren't impeaching those fools Bush and Cheney? That fortunately 'they' (aka the good guy Democrats) got rid of Gonzales... and after each of the above statements, said 'you know, everyone is saying these things'.

My dear sweet Aunt has ALWAYS voted Republican and lives in a gated community in Florida which, from what I can tell, is and has always been VERY Republican. Is everyone she knows stating that the Bushies need to be impeached? Who knows - but it was a very very enjoyable conversation.

BTW, my sister who posts here on DU also got this aunt hooked on Jon Stewart. My aunt said she couldn't wait to see what Jon (she calls him Jon like he's one of the family) was going to do with the events of this past week.

Happy Labor Day!
:hi:

1. jeez, you haven't been able to say 'bomb' at an airport for the last 30 years
I'm shocked they let her fly.

2. I know.
But you haven't been on the receiving end of her 'look'. I bet they were glad to be rid of her. I am sure she told me the tame part of the story. Wouldn't be surprised if she didn't continue to tell them exactly what she thought the whole time she was detained.

3. And don't forget to remind her
That with all this "enhanced" security to harass 80-year-old women at the airport, the government hasn't been able to do a damn thing about that yutz in Portugal phoning U.S. stores with bomb threats and extortion demands. Didn't Congress just give Bush all sorts of extra power to "get" these kinds of folks? Why are they so stymied by one lone nut on the Iberian Peninsula?

You could almost draw the conclusion that all this hype and hoopla is meaningless except for its power to cow the populace. But we know that can't be the case, because the President's such a good Christian man you'd love to have a beer with.

4. Good point.
I will save that NSA thing for our next conversation. She's not big on religion - never has been. The * admin catering to that crowd makes her crazy.

10. I may just send her the phone numbers of Reid and
Pelosi and ask her to give them a call. I think, coming from a die-hard Republican, they may take some notice of her opinion.

12. And maybe this is just my impression,
but we DEMs sure seem to care a heck of a lot about what the republicans think. We aren't supposed to impeach as that will turn off the RWingers and cause them to bond together so the DEMs will lose the next election. How's that for warped thinking?:silly:

6. A toast to little old ladies who are mad as hell
and aren't going to take it anymore. :toast:

It's the idiocies at airport security that are just one more thing disenchanting the old-time Republicans. I myself had the option at LaGuardia of finding a plastic baggie (at the airport, no less) to put my lip gloss in, or have it confiscated. Now how putting my lip gloss in a plastic baggie somehow made it safer I don't know, but them's the new rules.

8. Thank you kindly!
Maybe she and I need to go to Washington this fall to straighten them all out? Bet she would be up for that.

9. She's always been my favorite.
I haven't always agreed with her on every issue - especially politics. But she is a role model for me in many ways. I really like how she stands up to stupidity and how she has never been shy about expressing her opinion. She no shrinking violet.
