disagree without getting ugly, though I suspect that it isn't that they don't know how to, they just don't **want** to get along. And that brings up the issue of why they don't want to.

What are your hypotheses?

Some of mine:
There are many different kinds of trolls, some wearing the colors of candidates (or churches) whom they actually intend to harm. This is made possible by the fact that people have screen-names instead of their real names.

Lots of people have a financial stake in the game: money they've either given or that they receive, directly or indirectly.

Some people aren't being honest about what's most important to them: a candidate or a party; dominance or cooperative effort; dealing pain or discovering connection; power or truth . . . stuff like that.

Tooooo often it is more important to hurt than it is to learn.

P.S. Don't be a sucker; just don't let them use you.

34. Can't define "most", so I apologize for that reference.

I should have said most of what I read, though I can think of some specific instances and some of the names I associated with those threads.

I've even been a target a few times, because I like thought experiments and tried one recently in which I stated that not all Homosexuality is caused (pre-determined) by Biology, because I wanted to experiment with the idea of being proactive on the moral questions about being Gay, rather than ceding those answers by steering around them with the Biological claims. I can never tell whether the crazy reactions that kind of discussion provokes are genuinely crazy or just more role playing, so I steer around them.

Nice to meet you Steve. I've been re-employed (again!) lately, so I'm not here as much as I used to be, but I still believe in the wider value of DU, and though I usually just read the hot threads and don't engage, I'll say hi when I see you around.
