Candidates out in force in Iowa

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Democrat Bill Richardson donned a pair of Reebok tennis shoes for a day of parades in Iowa, while Democrat Hillary Clinton brought her husband, former President Clinton, to give her extra buzz on the campaign trail.

Presidential candidates flocked to the state on Labor Day. Iowans could hardly fire up a barbecue grill or attend a parade on Monday without bumping into a presidential candidate.

Sen. Hillary Clinton brought a familiar face with her as she campaigned at the Woodbury County Labor Day Picnic on Monday in Sioux City, Iowa.

In Des Moines, Democrat John Edwards touted his union endorsements. In Neola, Republican John McCain helped to dedicate a veterans monument.

Presidential hopefuls have been hitting the trail hard for months in Iowa and across the nation. But Labor Day is considered a political milestone. It is the day, some believe, that Americans begin tuning into the race. In Iowa, 132 days remain until the Jan. 14 caucuses.

"Voters are aware of the candidates but now they start narrowing them down," said Richardson, who began the day at a labor rally and a parade in Omaha.

Richardson, who is the governor of New Mexico, is the only state executive in the race. He also is a former congressman and was energy secretary under then-President Clinton. "I have the experience," he told one voter.

1. Where were the RepubliKlans? Don't they keep Labor Day?
Gee if Labor gets a day, why doesn't capital?
Uh, capital gets 365.25 days per year.
