Why do some politicians let the media set them up for a fall running for President

I'm talking about guys like Fred Thompson and Obama who let the media talk them into running for president. We saw this this year along with Obama with the media giving him all this nice free press saying he's an attractive candidate like JFK and as soon as he entered the race he was continually bashed saying he was to INEXPERIENCED.Then the lattest is Fred Thompson who two months ago gave this guy all this free good press saying he's what the conservatives are looking for he is like Reagan being an actor. and now on the eve of him announcing he's in the race already the media has turned on him. the only possible candidate that had the sense to see what the media was up to was Mario Cuomo who was the media darling in 1992.he decided not to run.

And it takes them a while to figure out that they're just the latest media plaything.
