...that's what the Conservative party vows to do if it wins the Ontario election (which looks rather likely). I never thought I would say this but, Canadian politicians are officially more fucked up than American ones.

3. More?
Um... There are people here trying to do away with the public education system and replace it with religious education. They just don't have the clout to do it yet.

9. Well, the way I see it...
Your religious nuts are very very loud, and that's how they function. Ours are much smarter, they work behind the scenes, they don't promote the fundamentalism up front.

15. No we got that too
A lot of schools got caught by stealth creationists that got on school boards and other positions. They brought creationism into the schools but were met with vociferous opposition. They have gained ground but they have not yet won the day.

11. It's a bad idea and even most of the religious schools here in the US
don't want it either. Yes, some of the Shrub loving ones take it if they can, but I've talked to quite a few pople involved with religious schools AND religious charities too, and they all said they weren't interested. When I asked why, they all said because there would be strings attached, no matter what the politicians said, and they didn't want that!

17. Offense
Why do you think that an action in Ontario Canada is an impeachable offense under our Constitution?

22. OF COURSE . . .. I was responding to the original question . .. .
Which was:

What do you think about diverting public school money towards private religious schools?

And to the other poster who mentioned US schools --

Unfortunately, we do now have US taxpayer money subsidizing religions -- in many ways, including religious schools.

Therefore, my comment ---

20. In the U.S., you'd have to overcome the First Amendment establishment
clause that essentially says that the government shall not establish any religion.

Here in the U.S. the Constitution trumps the voters on that issue. Courts would rule that using public money to fund a school that teaches or is heavily linked to a particular religion violates the First Amendment.

I believe that this may be an issue with the Arabic school in New York and a school oriented toward Israel and teaching Hebrew in Florida, I believe.

What the situation is in Canada, I don't know.
