Ravenel had resigned after his first court appearance earlier this summer.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Ravenel will be sentenced later. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a one million dollar fine when he is sentenced. His plea agreement calls for a reduced sentence if he helps prosecutors with their investigation.
Ravenel said in court Thursday he purchased cocaine from several different people and said he used cocaine as often as once a week.
The State Law Enforcement Division began an investigation in 2005 and obtained information that led to Ravenel. SLED turned the case over to federal prosecutors.
