Bloomberg on 2008 race: Time to get real (is he talking about Gore?)
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 04:32 PM by catgirl
People are speculating that Bloomberg may be hinting at a run.
He denies it. Is he talking about Al Gore?

NEW YORK - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg posted a statement on his personal Web site Thursday saying "it's time for something real" in the 2008 presidential campaign, while still denying that he will run.

The posting was sure to reignite speculation that the multibillionaire will enter the race next year as a self-financed, third-party candidate.

"For too long, the American people have been served up empty promises based on what politicians think we want to hear," he said in the statement. "It's time for something real. ... That's what this upcoming campaign needs to be about."

-snip-

"The question should not be about politics, but about leadership," the statement said. "Not who is the best candidate, but who will be the best president."

3. Sorry, just added link

I can't see any of the declared candidates as the President of the United States.
I can see Gore as the President though.

4. Thank you and I totally agree
regarding Al Gore for President, I believe he would be the best. However I'm not sure whether this interview by Bloomberg is an allusion to Al.

2. Last night Carl Bernstein said on Keith's show that Hillary is warily
watching Bloomberg--she's not worried about the Repugs, but she's worried about him running. I don't know if there's any connection to Gore, however.

11. NYT (April '07): Bloomberg for Gore?

Bloomberg for Gore?
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Throwing a curveball into speculation about both his - and Al Gore’s - political future, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg made a provocative comment today about a possible Gore presidential run.

“I hope Al Gore enters the race; I think it would be good for the country,” the mayor said.

Mr. Bloomberg this week moved to establish his chops as an environmental mayor by proposing congestion pricing for those who drive into Manhattan. While many have speculated about the Mayor himself running for president, could he be open to directing some of his fortune, and political clout, to Al Gore?

6. Its fun watching a plan come together.
I mentioned in a post a while ago that I think Bloomberg might know something we don't know. He has basically endorsed Al Gore in the past and was pretty strong in denying his entry into the race, which seems odd considering that he has done a lot to position himself for some type of run.

I am beginning to wonder if the "plan" is Gore/Bloomberg

7. Now that could be interesting

But then why wouldn't Bloomberg have switched to the dem party
instead of becoming an Independent?

8. To embrace the concept of unity.
The reality is that Bloomberg is more of a dem than most of our Democratic candidates; however, as an "independent" he carries more weight with those "on the fencers".

12. the difference of course is that Bloomberg was a lifelong Dem prior to running
for NYC mayor:

Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born 14 February 1942) is an American businessman, philanthropist, and the founder of Bloomberg L.P., currently serving as the Mayor of New York City. He was a general partner at Salomon Brothers before founding the financial software service company in 1981. Although a lifelong Democrat, he ran on the Republican ballot and was elected mayor in 2001, and was reelected to a second term in 2005.

Anyway, I am not a Bloomberg supporter, but if he wants to throw his billions towards Al gore-I say YEAH! Go for it!

This is the guy who invited GOP to have their convention in NYC and spied on the protest organizers, stopping us to rally in Central park. he is the guy responsible for those arrests ...What does it take to convince you guys that he is a tool like all the rest?

28. No kidding! I bet you heard him saying asthma happens in poor neigborhoods
because of poor hygiene - it was in a mayoral debate nobody watched. And also that if women wanted to be respected they'd spend more time in the libraries and less at Bloomingdales. In reality, Bloomberg is no less of a pig than Bush - he does have however his own media - and we see how this works for him!

23. Bloomberg switched parties because in the tribal politics of the NYC Democratic Party ...
He didn't have a shot at the nomination.

As far as the GOP Convention goes what mayor would pass on the sort of flood of money and business that goes with hosting a national convention. I don't like his actions at the convention any more than you do but in real life, the man has governed as a highly competent moderate to liberal mayor and compared to Rudy Giuliani he is God.

That being said I'd prefer to see him support someone on the Democratic side than split the vote.

30. He also tried to make NYC elections non-partisan - so Dems would lose any
advantage over GOP-ers. Funny how you never see those initiatives in Texas, but it's already inplemented in California... You should try reading other news sources than Bloomberg's own now and then.

This is nothing more than speculation. I hope like hell that Al Gore enters the Democratic primary and rightly wins the general election, but there is no sense in engaging in baseless speculation.

15. remember Bloomberg joked w/Gore about running/ Tribecca film festival when he introduced Gore!

The Gore, The Merrier
The DN's City Hall Bureau Chief Michael Saul writes:

Mayor Bloomberg said today he hopes former VP Al Gore enters the 2008 race for the White House, adding: "I think it would be good for the country."

Gore and Bloomberg attended the kickoff of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival this morning. At the event, Gore praised Bloomberg for his ambitious proposal to combat global warming and environmental degradation in the city, and specifically endorsed the mayor’s proposal to charge motorists to enter the busiest sections of Manhattan.

snip:

You know, people talk about Al Gore being a presidential candidate, a lot more serious than the joking about me. This guy could be a presidential candidate. He certainly has experience. And I think he’d give the public more choice, and I’ve always been in favor of the public having more choice, particularly if people who can look back and say, ‘I know what’s it like. I faced the difficult issues. And I want to lead this country.’ And I hope Al Gore enters the race. I think it would be good for the country."
Bloomberg, a lifelong Democrat who became a Republican to run for mayor in 2001, has no particular allegiance to any of the current Democratic candidates for president.

haaaaaaa!! ............

check this out.........

More (quite lengthy) Bloomberg ruminations about Gore follow after the jump:

"Let’s get serious here. Al Gore was vice president of the United States for eight years. He was a presidential aspirant and arguably won the popular vote. But we don’t have a system where the popular vote is what matters. It’s the Electoral College that decides. Al Gore served this country very well for those eight years."

Bloomberg and Gore joke about '08

Share April 26, 2007 6:18 AM

ABC's Jake Whitman Reports: Al Gore and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have each said they're not running for president, but that's not stopping the two men from having a little fun with all the speculation.

Gore and Bloomberg appeared together last night to kick off the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

Bloomberg was the first to get playful, when he introduced the former vice-president.
"His recent success has even prompted some talk that he might again try for the White House," Bloomberg said. "Don't you just hate those rumors about running for president?"
Gore kept the routine going moments later when asked whether he believes the '08 candidates are doing enough to focus on global warming.

"Well, I think Mike is," Gore said. Bloomberg turned red and laughed.
Gore went on to praise Bloomberg for his recent proposals to reduce New York's carbon emissions.

When Bloomberg was later asked to clear the air over his jab at Gore, the mayor told the AP, "People talk about Al Gore being a presidential candidate a lot more seriously than joking about me. This guy could be a presidential candidate," Bloomberg said. "He certainly has experience ... and I hope Al Gore enters the race. I think that would be good for the country."

24. Bloomberg is part of the establishment. So was Humphrey in 68.
Until the 1968, Richard Daley was considered a voice of the antiwar liberals (that was back when "liberal" was considered different from 'the left'). Humphrey, for all his establishmentness, was still a better choice than Nixon--and probably a more dependable commodity than McCarthy.

Our situation is not all that different today. The establishment didn't want this war in Iraq, even if a few acquiesced to it when the Vulcans started with the war drums. Bloomy is in that camp. I don't like most billionaires on general principle, but he's hardly a neocon or a Bushie.

I am a DU-er like everyone else - and yeah, I say that reverence to any republican at this point in history is disgusting!
I am hoping Gore runs too, but an endorsement from Bloomberg is the least Gore needs.

31. I don't think Bloomberg and Gore are cooking anything up, myself--
I think Bloomie admires him for his environmental policies, but I can't see these two ever joining forces as a political duo. However, Bloomberg is pretty well respected--I don't think it hurts to have him on Gore's side, or any Dem's side.

Gore needs known people to speak up and endorse
his running for President. Americans are so protective
of themselves that they can't go out on a limb and say
what's RIGHT. What's wrong with these people? You want
Al Gore to run? Then shout out that you want him to run!

Leonardo, you want Gore to run? Speak up!! Bloomberg,
stop hinting, come out with it!, Angelina, we know why
you aren't endorsing anyone yet...so he hasn't announced.
Who cares? He's the guy you know will make the best president.
SAY IT!! Don't wait until it's too late. Michael Moore, who's your
man? Donate, endorse, educate your fan base!

We should all be involved in convincing this wonderful man
that he has the backing and should move towards a run.
