"Repulsive" sums it up for me, too, especially when you add cigar breath to the equation.

Shudder.

90. Repulsive--thank you! That's the word I was looking for
yesterday when I volunteered my opinion of Fred Thompson's looks on another forum frequented by wingnuts as well as sane people (i.e. liberals). I haven't watched "Law and Order" in recent years, so I wasn't all that familiar with what he looks like until he announced his candidacy and I happened to see him on CNN. I thought to myself, "gawd, that man is UGLY!" but the word I was actually looking for is "repulsive.'

I wonder who his trophy wife fantasizes about when they get it on...assuming they do, of course.

He's too old for me, but I don't find him "repulsive" as another poster put it. He looks like a man. I don't see why this type of thing comes up about candidates all the time. Have our elections turned into "The Dating Game?" People talk bad about Hillary's appearance, or John Edwards hair. Then they go on about Obama's race, or his name and now we need to decide if Fred Thompson is attractive? It's really not that important.

They're touting him as the new Ronald Reagan; do they mean in looks or personality? If that's the

18. I think the Reagan comparison is based on little more than
that both were C-list actors and right-wingers. In terms of looks and charisma, there seems to be very little comparison between the two. So, while the comparison seems pretty weak, it's worth remembering that the Repugs are also pretty desperate!

Thompson is the actor who wants to play the part of the actor who played the part of the President.

This is a sign of how completely devoid of real principles the Republican party is.

19. Lot of women are attracted to POWERFUL MEN
It is built into their genes over 4 million years
of evolution, the powerful men were better providers
and better protectors of the children. The women who
followed that trait had the best chance of passing
on the genes.

Which explains why not so handsome men like Fred Thompson
and Henry Kissinger and others have no trouble finding
very attractive females.

Reagan had good bullshit lines. (i.e. "the great communicator")

I just posted on another thread: "Knowledge is power." So I've always been attracted to INTELLIGENT men, which by all accounts rules out Fred Thompson.

I've got my own evolutionary imperative which has worked out JUST fine for me...two children in the Gifted and Talented program, and the younger one with two master's degrees.

About the only thing Fred Thompson has in common with my late husband is that they're both tall!

I think men who find some vast truth in ideas like this know they have nothing going for themselves as mensches, so they hope a dumb, macho swagger will get them some action.

Most of those women who are attracted to "POWERFUL MEN" are actually attracted to their money.

111. No, it is not built into our genes
Women prefer good looking men just like men prefer good looking women. Women prefer young men to older men. Why is it that women no longer marry men 20 years older like they might have in Victorian times? Because women can get their own jobs now and aren't forced into it.

Why, when women get money and power themselves, do they find boy toys? Look at Cher and Demi Moore. No, women "found" men with money attractive when they had to. Now, they are freer to let their actual preferences take over.

Of course there are always exceptions but they are based on the individual's insecurities and needs. Even successful women may feel insecure, and some people are desperate to retain where they are so far and can't stand to fall lower. Others may actually just have an attraction for the individual in question, regardless of age.

These right wing talking points about how our "genes" mean we want other than what we think we want always come from men who aren't attractive physically but hope that by earning $$$, they will somehow get a sweet young thing as their biggest consumer item. Not gonna happen.

112. It's funny how the right wing and the media try to get around this
by insisting on its opposite. I feel like they know he is fugly ugly and think the way to get around it is to just start claiming he's attractive and go from there. The fact of the trophy wife is all they have to use, and the trophy wife herself is a liability - it'd be the first one in the WH - so they try to make a strength out of a weakness with all that caveman crap.

It sounds to me like a bad choice - there are a lot of middle aged women in the population right now, and this is not the sort of thing they want to hear.

Me? I'm not nearly as impressed with a man's money and fame as I am with other qualities. And I'm sure Fred can turn on the charm when he wants but I've never found his brand of charm all that compelling.

As for how he looks, forget it.

63. Oh, yes! Wes Clark is my idea of an attractive man! So was John Kerry, to me.
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 08:47 AM by CTyankee
Interestingly, I am not attracted to John Edwards as much physically, altho he is certainly handsome, as to what he is saying about leadership.

But in an Edwards-Thompson matchup, well, game over...

Romney is all they've got in the looks dept. & he's so stiff it's scary! They made fun of Gore for being stiff, but Romney is a board!

My prediction is Mitt will be nominee because of his looks, not his views!

and a special type of charm wooed the ladies. Somehow he had the ability to date very high profile women, break-up up friends. Some
of his ex-girlfriends are his most ardent supporters.

No, I do not see the attraction.

And his politics make him even less attractive. Might as well support Dick Cheney.

80. I gather it isn't so much a matter of "attractive"
in the physical sense:
“Fred is a perfect example of chivalry. He’s the kind of man little girls dream about marrying, who opens doors for you, lights your cigarettes, helps you on with your coat, buys wonderful gifts. It’s every woman’s fantasy.”

“I think he has a great chance of capturing the women’s vote. He’s majestic. He’s a soft, safe place to be and that could be Fred’s ticket. Women love a soft place to lay and a strong pair of hands to hold us,” she said.

He is just as able to charm professional women, she added: “Another thing that is extremely attractive about Fred is that he is a really good listener. As a woman you can talk to Fred about any subject and know that you’re getting someone who respects your opinion and isn’t just being polite.”

Anybody who thinks that holding a door open for me is going to score points has a nasty shock coming. None of this is remotely attractive to me, other than that listening/respecting my opinion stuff, but I can't see why I'd be interested in telling him, because it's not like he's going to respect it enough to change any of his ugly ideas, apparently.

On the physical side -- well, it's a little tiresome to read all the yech comments here. Not everyone is 21. I'm a lot closer to Thompson's age than I am to 21, and my reaction to a whole lot of the 20-somethings I see on TV, for instance, is yech. The post-adolescent hunk du jour these days really doesn't do it for me; I just see somebody with the latest fad in haircuts or other adornments, and I find them all pretty unappealing. And frankly, I can't for the life of me grasp why grown-up men don't feel the same way about the boopsies du jour.

Thompson is perfectly passable for his age. At least as much so as I am. I happen to know what he is, and not be remotely attracted by it. That doesn't mean that he's physically yech.

Me, I think Joe Biden is cute as a button. But that's probably just because I'm gaga for his brain.

Lucky for me, the apple of mine own eye bears a strong resemblance to one of my favourite fictional characters.

Hmm. Joe may have a bit of the Gul Dukat in him too ...

Believe me, some of us do. I'm 34, not that old, but I have NO interest in the 20ish skeletons that Hollywood pushes as being the height of feminine beauty.

Not to mention the fact that many of them seem to be about as smart as the average rock. NOT a turn-on, IMO.

98. Well, I'm older than his trophy wife!
..but I'm sorry: one of my first criterion for attraction is that a guy be a free-thinker, a non-conformist and a lefty liberal. I would do Jon Stewart from head to toe, and he's about 1/2 shorter than I am! But I don't care--I wish Traci would loan him to me for one weekend so I could consume him slowly and savour every moment.

Now, with that fantasy in mind, there's NO WAY I would ever go for a Thompson type. I hate men that think you like to be "treated like a lady" it's usually code for sexist pig. It's a bloody shame that some women would find that "charming" or "attractive". They must not have much confidence in their own capacities if they would defer to someone like that.

I did find him a likable character in The Hunt for Red October, but that's about it. In terms of older men having sex appeal? Forget it - the King of Older Men With Sex Appeal was in that movie - Sean Connery. Thompson's not even on the charts.

And beside whatever may be likable about him, politically he's an empty pillow case.
