"It's fearlessness that the American people need right now, more than anything else."
September 06, 2007
John Edwards for President
Dana Blankenhorn

My personal Presidential primary is over.

For what it's worth I have decided to support John Edwards.

This was not an easy call.

My own work on Internet politics and on American political history indicates that Hillary Clinton should be favored, that Barack Obama has the potential to be a Reagan or Roosevelt, and that John Edwards is, on the whole, attacking the Nixon-Bush Thesis of Conflict frontally, just when that thesis is collapsing of its own weight.

But statements like this, so simple and straightforward, keep coming to me:

President Bush wants everyone to keep playing the Beltway game. But this isn’t a game - lives are at stake. Young men and women are dying almost every day and Iraq is descending further into civil war. It’s time to end the game - we can’t wait. Congress must tell the president something very simple: No timetable, no funding. No excuses.

There is something fearless in this. And fearlessness has been a hallmark of the Edwards campaign ever since Elizabeth Edwards' cancer turned fatal.

It's fearlessness that the American people need right now, more than anything else. Fearlessness before the Bush Junta. Fearlessness before the media lies. Fearlessness before our own faults. Fearlessness before our own responsibilities. Fearlessness in the face of death.

In fearlessness there is strength.

(snip)

John Edwards is, for me, the clearest path to where we need to go. So I'm with him. I'm just sad it took me so long to admit it.

1. Wonderful!
I spent my afternoon campaigning for Edwards. The positive responses were downright exciting. People like him. The press is way behind. People are delighted to see expressions of support for Edwards. It is quite phenomenal. He has more secret admirers than any other candidate.

2. Good to hear that you're out campaigning for Edwards!
Yes, the press is way behind! Did you read the rest of the article... about the media?

Can John Edwards win? He's first in Iowa, has risen to second in South Carolina, and money is not really his problem. His problem is the media, and its constant harping on the "horse race" to the exclusion of all else.

So get new media. That's what Americans are already doing. That's an ongoing process which will continue. As I've written here many times, the media of the 1960s didn't get the conservative movement, and the newspapers of the 1930s didn't get Roosevelt. In both cases it took new media, and the mastery of that media by the new movement's operatives, to change the tone of the debate.

5. I'm still listening to other candidates, but fearlessness is
going to be it. I was thinking about him and why he is so important to the american people. He is walking through a tough time like so many of us here at D.U. Granted it is about different things. I will probable get a better chance to hear his talking points next week when his in town. I want someone that will end this war, and impeach.

7. John Edwards' Plan To End The War In Iraq
John Edwards' Plan To End The War In Iraq

"We don't need debate; we don't need non-binding resolutions; we need to end this war. In order to get the Iraqi people to take responsibility for their country, we must show them that we are serious about leaving, and the best way to do that is to actually start leaving." -- John Edwards

There is no military solution to the chaos in Iraq. Instead, the Iraqi people must solve the problem politically by taking responsibility for their country. By leaving Iraq, America will induce the Iraqi people, regional powers, and the entire international community to find the political solution that will end the sectarian violence and create a stable Iraq. We must show the Iraqis that we are serious about leaving by actually starting to leave, with an immediate withdrawal of 40,000-50,000 troops.

We can only achieve these steps through legislative action. Edwards strongly supports the supplemental spending bill passed by both Houses of Congress and vetoed by President Bush that funds the troops with a timetable for withdrawal. He has called for Congress to respond to the President's veto by sending back the same bill—and doing this as many times as it takes for the President to end the war. Edwards supports the following specific steps:

Stop the Escalation and Immediately Start the Drawdown

Edwards opposed President Bush's "surge" and supports immediately drawing down 40,000 to 50,000 combat troops.

Require Troops to be Ready

We should prohibit funding for any new troops that do not meet real readiness standards and that have not been properly trained and equipped. American tax dollars should be used to train and equip our troops, not to escalate the war.

Clarify the Lack of Legal Foundation for the War

The 2002 authorization did not give President Bush the power to use U.S. troops to police a civil war. Edwards believes that Congress should make it clear that President Bush exceeded his authority long ago. The president now needs to end the war and ask Congress for new authority to manage the withdrawal of the U.S. military presence and to help Iraq achieve stability.

Withdraw Combat Troops within about a Year

Edwards believes we should completely withdraw all combat troops in Iraq within about a year and prohibit permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq. After withdrawal, we should retain sufficient forces in the region to contain the conflict and ensure that instability in Iraq does not spill over into other countries, creating a regional war, a terrorist haven, or a genocide.

Take Additional Steps to Stabilize Iraq

Edwards believes we should intensify U.S. efforts to train the Iraqi security forces. He would also step up U.S. diplomatic efforts by engaging in direct talks with all the nations in the region, including Iran and Syria, to bring a political solution to the sectarian violence inside Iraq, including through a peace conference.
