AUSTIN – More than anything, the new book on President Bush reflects a time-honored tradition in Washington: legacy-building. The author persuaded Mr. Bush to do interviews for the book as the first draft of history. For the White House, it's the first draft of revisionist history.

In this take on the Bush presidency, it was administrator Paul Bremer who dismantled the Iraqi army contrary to the president's expectations. It was Chief Justice John Roberts who recommended Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court (a claim Justice Roberts denies). The George W. Bush depicted in the book Dead Certain is the consummate leader, cool, transcendent, in-charge.

:spray:

In a riveting chapter about the day of 9/11, the president "strode briskly" and barked commands, overruling Vice President Dick Cheney's recommendation that he not return to Washington.

"Bush looked out the window. He could see the stubble on the pilot's face. It was not like the president to feel fear at such moments," author Robert Draper writes.

3. He was cool, transcendant and in charge when he
decided to desert his military unit so he wouldn't have to pee in a bottle. Now thats leadership. And when he got alberto to get him out of jury duty so we wouldn't find out he had a DUI, and when he profited from insider trading at harken, george always in charge. And when he intentionally lied us into a war costing tens of thousands their lives, bush the consummate professional.

10. Check out the book reviews at Amazon.com
As Woodward's books showed, too, even Bush's admirers can't portray him in a favorable light to anyone with half a brain. A lot of work went into this and the effort, as journalism, is commendable. But as history? Who could give more than 2 stars to any book that tries to remain "neutral" about Bush?

George W. Bush is unquestionable the dumbest, most stubborn, most destructive and most callous President in our history. The effort here is commendable, but it is hard to stomach a book that doesn't condemn this man on every page.

And let's not forget (unlike a previous post claimed), "the American people" most definitely did NOT elect this man President. He received less votes than Al Gore in 2000, and 2004 is still being argued. At best, far less than half of the eligible voting public chose him.

Some men have taken an undistinguished life and sparked to greatness once given the astonishing opportunities of the American Presidency. Bush is not one of them and his time in office will be viewed by future historians as an unparalleled disaster. In that regard, books like this will be a resource, all the more so for the friendly effort behind it.

Got an advance copy but didnt read it till Monday, and couldn't put it down. Not sure whether the President wants to be remembered as a confuzzled mess or "Dead Certain", not a good choice either way. Lots of great nuggets of info. I didnt know that CJ Roberts was the one that suggested Harriet Miers for AJ, (Neither did Roberts who denied it today). At the end I felt dirty, and had to take a shower, last time that happened was when i saw "Bad Lieutenant" years ago. If Draper, who it seems was just reporting, and the President colluded on this it's the worst attempt at "getting out in front of history". When the Movie "The Bear" came out about, Bear Bryant years ago they asked Ken Stabler if he would go see it. He replied, "I dont have to I saw the Bear play the Bear". As interesting as the tidbits are, and their were a lot, GWB cant write his own history book, because weve all seen GWB play himself and obviously that movie was a flop as well.
