Oprah's Touch
– Can the woman with the Midas touch turn Obama into gold?

Oprah Winfrey, who announced several months ago that she putting her juice behind the Illinois senator, already has proved that she can sell virtually anything, but will she be able to convince her main constituent – women – that they should abandon the chance to make history by putting the first woman in the White House?

Sen. Hillary Clinton resonates with many women – particularly Black women – because her husband, Bill, is still revered as the most popular president in recent memory; others see Hillary Clinton as a powerful symbol of intelligence, confidence and experience.

But, Winfrey’s star-studded fundraiser at her posh California crib on Saturday and the subsequent images of the talk-show diva glowing next to Obama in TV ads might just be enough to cause a dramatic shift in political momentum.

Speaking to CNN, Marty Kaplan, a communications professor at the University of Southern California, said, "I think what Oprah can do is potentially bring out the congregants of the church of Oprah. She is a charismatic leader of a lay congregation. People buy books when she tells them to. They will watch her shows, and buy her magazines when she asks them to. So the question is, are enough of them willing to follow her lead not with a consumer good, but with a ballot cast?"
