Does Fred Thompson Remind You Of Goober?
Edited on Sat Sep-08-07 11:51 AM by ruggerson
I mean, seriously, what's this Andy Griffith schtick? The guy's been living in Hollywood and/or Washington for almost FORTY years.

He's as phony as a <<put your stupid, folksy Southern aphorism here>>.

on edit: See post #6 below. Thompson is the ULTIMATE Washington insider.

5. He's a lousy actor......
Thompson plays the same role in every movie he's been in--gruff, no-nonsense man-in-charge, usually in some sort of law enforcement capacity. He is never on screen for very long or has a very big role because the man can't act! Thompson's performance in his first campaign ad reveals just how talent-free he is, in spite of many years as a paid actor.

The Republicans are in for a rude shock if they're expecting Thompson to be another Reagan. Reagan was actually much better at his vocation (acting, that is). He may have been Hollywood B-list, but at least Reagan could get the job done.

8. You lie!
He's horribly miscast in Law & Order, but I LOVE Fred Thompson's one character that he plays over and over. He does a pretty effective villain, too, where he's allowed to show some more range and color in his characterization.

His current role as a heroic liberal busting, country saving, ex lobbyist isn't going to be all that big a performance, I don't think. But he was absolutely perfect in "Red October." After the campaign is over, I'd kinda like to see him do a spin off with that character.

10. I don't even REMEMBER him in Red October.....
tho it has been quite a while since I've seen that movie.

I do remember Thompson in quite a few other movies, and sorry, but he is strictly johnnie-one note. I actually like his one-note film character, or at least I did until I realized he was trying to parlay it into a stay in the White House.

Fred, Did We Really Know You?

Far be it from me to start trouble, but former Tennessee Republican senator Fred Thompson, the presidential candidate who portrays himself as a conservative outsider capable of reforming Washington, is playing down his kinship with this town. Thompson may campaign as a steadfast son of the South, but he is really one of us.

In fact, no other White House hopeful, Republican or Democrat, can come close to matching Thompson's insider credentials. He alone among the contenders has managed to reach the pinnacle of Washington influence: the presidency of the Federal City Council, a powerful, behind-the-scenes group comprising a who's who of this city's top business, professional and civic leaders. The Federal City Council is synonymous with the Washington establishment, and Thompson was its chosen leader from 2003 to 2005.

The list of former council presidents reads like a roster of the city's famous heavy hitters. Thompson succeeded former Senate majority leader Bob Dole. Former House speaker Tom Foley preceded Dole.

Then, as now, Thompson was regarded as wise in the ways of money, lobbying and our special-interest culture. He cut his teeth on Washington, arriving on the scene of the Watergate hearings at age 30 as an up-and-coming Judiciary Committee lawyer. He later stepped through the revolving door and made good money working Capitol Hill for corporate clients and causes that caught his fancy.

9. He's a bit more Floyd the Barber
Which, you gotta admit, is at least a step up from "electing" Barney Fife as president.
