Profiles of potential candidates for Hagel's Senate seat

Jon Bruning, Republican

Age: 38

Odds he'll run: Off and running

Current job: Nebraska attorney general (since 2002)

Former job: Attorney and state senator (1996-2000)

The buzz: Bruning was preparing for a primary battle against Chuck Hagel. It might have been easier for him to tackle an incumbent who had alienated many conservatives with his criticism of President Bush than someone like former Gov. Mike Johanns, a possible candidate. Now we'll see how the Bruning campaign adjusts without its favorite punching bag — Hagel — in the ring.

The latest: Bruning said Hagel's decision to get out of the race doesn't impact his campaign in the least. He said he's in this race to stay. "I'm running to win," Bruning said.

Hal Daub, Republican

Age: 66

Odds he'll run: Good to a done deal

Current job: Partner in law firm of Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin in Omaha and Washington, D.C.

Former job: Omaha mayor (1995-2001) and Nebraska congressman (1981-89)

The buzz: After completing a 93-county tour of Nebraska, Daub is said to be close to making his own announcement.

The latest: "I have set no timetable on a decision. Folks that know me know I attempt to be thorough and do my homework."
