Hillary Leads GOP in Virginia, Warner has substantial Senate lead
Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 09:00 AM by wyldwolf
No Democratic Presidential candidate has won the state of Virginia since 1964, but some analysts believe the state’s Electoral College Votes could be in play during Election 2008. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows that those expectations might not be out of line.

In fact, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton currently has a 2-4 percentage point advantage over three leading Republican Presidential hopefuls. Not only is Clinton competitive in the Presidential race, Democrat Mark Warner has a substantial lead in the race for the U.S. Senate seat from Virginia.

In a Presidential match-up with the GOP frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani, Clinton has a 44% to 41% edge. When matched against the newest entrant in the race, Clinton earns 46% of the vote while Fred Thompson attracts 44%. Clinton leads former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney by four points, 44% to 40%.

---------------

If Democrat Mark Warner jumps into the Virginia Senate race for 2008, he will start out with a large lead over two Republicans expected to campaign for the job.

In a match-up of former Virginia Governors, a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds Warner leading Jim Gilmore by twenty percentage points, 54% to 34%. Warner also starts the season with a comfortable lead over Virginia Congressman Tom Davis. The Rasmussen Reports poll shows Warner attracting 57% of the vote while Davis earns 30%.

2. But...but...Hillary's unelectable!
Or so some have told us....

LOL

I'm in CA so I don't really get a voice in who our candidate will be this time around. Luckily, I'm happy with our top three contenders.

5. Alot of excitement here....for both Warner and Hillary...
The expectation is that Warner will announce he is a candidate for the Senate on Thursday...

And Hillary will be campaigning in Charlottesville soon as well with John Grisham

16. Not in my parts of The Beltway and a little south.
Many of these good ole' boys with stars and bars on their picky-up trucks are seemingly salivating at the mouth hoping for a HRC nomination. That way they can mobilize all the church buses to help get THEIR people to the polls. It's not happening' here. However, in Fredericksburg there's plenty of support for Obama, i.e., Fredericksburg is the exception to the RW havens scattered just south of the beltway.

21. My grandfather is a Democrat and he's not excited about her.
And, he's also a Virginian.

And, he doesn't know anyone outside of the Beltway who is - including Democrats.

22. Well I guess it depends on who you run with...
I meet literally dozens who support her...even the occasional Republican...

You dismiss "inside the beltway," but of course that area and the near suburbs are the fastest growing in the state population wise, and the section that is literally turning Virginia blue....

6. This is promising but I wonder which way the coattails will work in VA.
Will Hillary at the top weight down Warner's chances (though he's still a favorite to win) or will Warner on the ballot help propel Hillary up a few notches?

8. And that's how to turn a red state blue.

Yes, there's an excellent chance that Warner will clinch the deal. The GOPs free-fall in Virginia is a mirror image of their next-door neighboring republicans serious afflictions on Capitol Hill.

10. Suit up! Va is in the mix in '08 just like it was in '04
Bush didn't win this state by 8% sorry I'll never believe it.

I will tell you this-IF you want to win this state get the buses loaded up and drive route 58 parallel to the Carolina border. You can bundle the whole thing into a rural/country focus week. You just might be able to bring that part of North Carolina with you.

Route 58 is the key.

15. Rural 58 looks like it would be a beautiful drive - is it?
That would be a trip that Hillary might actually do when she campaigns in Virginia. She did all those upstate NY trips to win those doubters over.
