Republicans' favorite Democrat: Obama (WSJ/NBC poll)
Edited on Wed Sep-12-07 08:27 PM by antiimperialist
If I was a Republican I wouldn't think I have anything in common with Obama, but that's what the poll found.

"...And when Republicans were asked which Democrat they’d prefer, Obama was first (at 26 percent), followed by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (at 23 percent) and John Edwards (at 20 percent). Clinton came in fourth (at 14 percent)."

23. I don't see Obama as "right" at all - but he himself says he is "small step change" and that might
appeal.

29. linky please
I've heard him criticizing others for tinkering around the edges when we need visionary change. I don't know what you're referring to, exactly.

<snip>There are three things that Democratic political candidates tend to do when talking with constituents: they display an impressive grasp of the minutiae of their constituents’ problems, particularly money problems; they rouse indignation by explaining how those problems are caused by powerful groups getting rich on the backs of ordinary people; and they present well-worked-out policy proposals that, if passed, would solve the problems and put the powerful groups in their place. Obama seldom does any of these things. .... And the solutions he offers generally sound small and local rather than deep-reaching and systemic.

<snip>But redemption is brittle. After Harold Washington died suddenly, in his second term, his achievement, such as it was, fell to pieces almost at once. “There was no political organization in place, no clearly defined principles to follow,” Obama writes. “The entire of black politics had centered around one man who radiated like a sun.” To a man less conservative, this failure might have been crushing—a demonstration of the impossibility of change—but to Obama it seemed only one more proof that charisma is misleading, that revolutions are illusory, that real change is slow. Now that he is running for office himself, it is likely he knows he can be as much harmed as lifted up by celestial expectations, so he tries, in small ways, to discourage them. Obama stands on the ground. If he thought his winning would take a revolution, he wouldn’t have run.

8. Most people don't research candidates' records or positions on the issues
They just pick up whatever they hear on the TV or from friends. Obama gives the impression of a moderate whenever you hear him because he's not out there throwing red meat or demonizing his opponents (other than Bush/Cheney perhaps). Edwards has been careful to try and give a similar impression in his public appearances on TV, even as he courts the liberal blogosphere via press releases on the internet. The question is whether or not they can maintain that impression after getting attacked by the Republicans.

18. Well a lot of the repukes don't like any of the repuke candidates
so may consider voting for a democrat. I think it's reason to support Obama, myself. I have exactly one repuke friend who doesn't like any of the repug nominees, or any of the dem nominees, with the exception of Obama. We NEED the votes of people who are disgusted with their party, and their nominees.

13. It's like the 80s when Reagan sucked all the dems to his side. It's payback
and the most amazing thing is that they don't care about his progressive ideas. they like him and feel he will show them respect even if he doesn't agree. they are just as sick of all the partisan shit as us.
We can suck all these republicans and indies to our side with Obama and he will get a landslide.

15. It's because he is respectful of other opinions, while upholding his own values.
He doesn't talk down to those with whom he disagrees. He's not a partisan. That's what Americans are looking for.

21. I said this months back that when
you hear a talk radio Nazi and now this stupid polling by nbc saying great things about Obama, should make you wonder. Why would a facsist bastard on radio or tv say nice things about Obama? I have nothing bad to say about Obama. But seriously, between Obama and the only team to win back-to-back presidential campaigns since FDR, (the team that beat war hero Bush and war hero Dole), ...who do you think the super-racist GOP wants to run against? Think about it folks.....Sad but true....

Ben David

I had a "I'm a publican cause daddy was a publican" publican at work tell me that he liked Obama because of the Iraq war and how Obama talks.

I still haven't met a single person that wants Hillary for president. But I only meet about 3 to 10 people a day 5-6 days a week so

25. I really think it's Hillary they want.
That's why she's being shoved down our throats. You really don't see many Obama pieces like this. Sad but true is the fact that she would bring out the repug voters like no other candidate. Not many racists will vote for ANY dem.

Hillary is the GOP's DREAM candidate for us. She would be a get-out-the vote candidate like no other - but, for the wrong party.

Sometimes when people say nice things, it's because they're true. Hillary is not the one who won back-to-back campaigns, her husband did. She doesn't have his charisma, his ability to reach out to people, or his political smarts. She is intelligent, of course, but she isn't Bill, and anyone who thinks the GOP is afraid of her is mistaken IMO.

27. Note : Republicans.
NOT neocons. NOT the fragile right wing coalition of religious right, and anti-Hillary nutjobs, which blew up over Iraq. THAT can only be reunited if Hillary is the nominee, because, as this poll demonstrates, that's something they all agree on.
