Dwight D. Eisenhower: Flaming Liberal
I found this web page with quotes from Ike to be an interesting sign of the times - then and now. The thing that gets me thinking is that the Dems of the time of course were even more liberal than Ike.

This site details a lot of quotes by Ike that are too liberal for even Democrats to say today.

1. Hey! Thanks For The Plug!
That's my site - how much do I owe you?

Seriously, it's hard to believe how far to the right today's Democrats are.

7. There were right-wing Democrats, called "Dixicrats" in those days.
Very pro-segregation, pro big business, andti-civil rights, etc.

2. Whenever anyone asks if there has ever been a
Republican president that actually did anything for this country's people, the name that always pops into my mind is Eisenhower. I never knew about a lot of those quotes, though.

He's the only one I can think of with (real) military experience (Reagan's making training films for the Army doesn't count) and an understanding of what war does to people.

4. Great writing, Manny!
If Ike emerged on today's political scene, he'd be as marginalized as Dennis Kucinich. I can imagine his military record getting swiftboated like John Kerry's. He'd be lambasted by the likes of John Bolton for his unabashed support for the United Nations and chastised for being a 'big-government liberal' by Grover Norquist and his ilk.

This essay gives a good demonstration of how the ground has shifted under our feet as far as political identification goes. What were once conservatives are now considered on 'the left,' while fascism has moved toward 'the center' of American politics. I certainly consider the DLC's 'Republican Lite' pro-corporate platform as a move toward fascism where corporatism is concerned.

6. Yea, overthrowing Iran's democratically elected government is really liberal
Eisenhower was a lot better than today's Republicans but that's the extent of the good things I'll say about him.

8. We have become a military industrial complex.
It's not a part of our nation, it IS our nation. We have become this. Heartbreak. Now what?
