Tweety: "Am I worried?? Damn straight."
Wow. There were many comments on DU last night about Tweety's demeanor and visage. He looked ten years older.

Tonight (Friday) was more of the same. He said the above when discussing Bush's comments about a Korea-like commitment to Iraq. "Am I worried? Damn straight."

I wonder what it particularly was that sobered him up.

2. Tweety is a political power player who never misses a chance to suck up ...
There's an angle, an agenda that we are not privy to.

Don't hold your breath on Tweety talking open and honest. He likes it best when he can serve his corporate masters by keeping us "chattering classes" at each other's throat.

Ratings, Ratings!

He wants to get those ratings up so he can show his mug day after day after day after day after day after day after day.

He is a Bushie forever and ever.

13. He is aware
of issues involving the possible spread of violence in the Middle East. Chris Matthews has actually provided more information, over the past four years, about the potential spread of conflict to Iran, than all of the other cable news shows combined. Bush's statements about a long-time military presence in Iraq might be viewed in that context.

14. Don't Confuse People With Facts
I noted that Matthews was always skeptical about this war and another poster offered as a rebuttal an "attack" Matthews made on Phil Donahue when he was a guest on Phil's short lived MSNBC Show... I have two thoughts on that... One was that I was surprised Phil didn't acquit himself better and the second is how that "attack" made Matthews a proponent of the war...

He did vote for Bush in 00 but not in 04 and that isn't good in my book but , again, he never supported this war...

16. Yeah, He Never Supported The NeoCon Ivasion...
Phil should have acquitted himself better...He knows how the game is played... He's no virgin to this genre...

Matthews has always been seduced by the "strong man" theory...

Matthews can be embarrassingly sexist or rakish at times by telling his female guests who come on to discuss serious topics they are attractive or in common parlance "hot or hawt".

These are all separate issues...

25. Tweety's complete disillusionment with the Iraq war has been obvious
for two or three years.

He sees real problems in the Middle East getting worse.

He also thinks that no matter what we do and how long we stay, the Iraqis will settle this among themselves when we leave, and that could be a major problem for the entire region.

Folks may not like Matthews for other reasons, but he's been sceptical of the war, and is not one of the current cheerleaders for moving on Iran and Syria.

31. Some things about Chris Matthews you maybe didn't know
He just calls them as he sees them and, to me, is a TRULY fair and balanced journalist. As for his looking bad last night....Matthews has diabetes and has some really bad times with it. If he doesn't mention he'll be gone and you suddenly see someone filling in for 3 or 4 days (or longer), it's his illness. He has had some close calls over the last 3 or 4 years, including several hospitalizations. He sometimes works when he is not well. I like the guy, always have. He is an incredibly nice person, politically astute as hell (read his books!) and he has a great Democratic family of which two are activists within the party. He, himself, was Chief of Staff to former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill and sought a seat in Congress in his home district in Philly years ago when he was a young man. Matthews is a good guy, angry about this war, this president, and is not doing well physically - sometimes we need to cut him some slack. His show has done a lot to wake people up. He was around "doing politics" when KO was in diapers (don't get me wrong I LOVE Keith!); many don't realize that Chris Matthews turns 62 this year.

My aunt lives with it, and those unstable periods are hideous. He has my best wishes for the constant struggle with that disease.

I like him, too, even when I don't agree with him.

He handles the commentators of various views well, too. That's a tough job.

35. yes, we know about the diabetes and his background...
...but as far as your subjective comments go, many here who have watched him for years and years and years will disagree to some extent. There have been many times when he is poorly informed -- no excuse for that! There are too many times when he wants to hear his own voice more than the comments of those he's questioning. There are times when he is naive and romantic about thugs and cheats.

Cut him some slack? Many of us are still viewing him even with his faults -- and *that* is slack.

But what you said is fair & I understand.

Obviously from the other sub-post under mine, everyone doesn't know about the diabetes. And who is "we"? I, too, have watched Matthews for years. I knew him well when he was writing for the San Francisco Examiner. I don't think that mystical "we" probably knows much about him at all; excepting that he has the nickname of 'Tweety.' That's why I made the post.

But again, your criticisms are fair and I have no problems with them. I don't claim he's perfect. No such thing. In any of us.
