Is It Too Much To Ask?
Is it too much to ask that the President of the United States be able to speak coherently, and not act like a dumb yahoo in front of the entire world?

Is it too much to ask that the Constitution be upheld by every public official who takes a solemn oath to do so, rather than devoting their tenure in office trying to find legal loopholes to get around it?

Is it too much to ask that our troops not be sent into harm’s way based on intelligence completely fabricated by those with a political agenda that has nothing to do with interests of national security?

Is it too much to ask that those same troops be afforded every possible piece of life-saving equipment while in combat, and every possible life-saving medical treatment when they return wounded and disabled?

Is it too much to ask that when billions of dollars ‘go missing’ from our treasury, somebody in power gets to the bottom of it?

Is it too much to ask that when an Administration has already failed miserably on two war-fronts, they refrain from suggesting even the remote possibility of a third?

Is it too much to ask that when an American city – an American city – is in trouble, every possible measure is taken to ensure the safety of its occupants, and its swift reconstruction?

Is it too much to ask that our government act in the interests of the citizenry first and the interests of Big Oil, Big Pharma and Big Business last?

Is it too much to ask that in the richest country on the face of the earth, no one goes bankrupt or dies as a result of a lack of basic healthcare?

Is it too much to ask that in a country of so much personal wealth, children not live their lives in abandoned cars for want of a roof over their heads?

Is it too much to ask that the separation of Church and State be adhered to and enforced, rather than obfuscated?

Is it too much to ask that elected officials who wallow in the ill-gotten gains of bribe-taking and corruption be removed from office by those of their own party who know of their behavior before national headlines force their hand?

Is it too much to ask that the pursuit of diplomacy be the first option and war be the last?

Is it too much to ask that in a time of war, military advisors be chosen on the basis of their experience and expertise, and not on their willingness to be yes men?

Is it too much to ask that the so-called Christian mouthpieces in our country focus on the unChristian-like behavior inherent in sanctioning torture instead of pumping up the volume on issues like gay marriage?

Is it too much to ask that the Attorney General of the United States be someone who can actually remember what went on under his leadership of an office meant to protect the rights of citizens, and not the personal whims of a president or a political party?

Is it too much to ask that any elected or appointed government official swear to tell the truth under threat of perjury instead of demanding back-room, off-the-record discussions before agreeing to speak?

Is it too much to ask that taxpayers’ dollars be spent on our own nation first before a single penny is allocated to destroying someone else’s nation?

Is it too much to ask that the words executive privilege not be accepted as an excuse for hiding the truth?

Is it too much to ask that our elected representatives act in the best interests of their country rather than the special interests of their party?

Is it too much to ask that the Land of the Free go from a tearful remembrance of what we were, and go back to being who we are?

The truth is that it is too much to ask, because it should be demanded as our right and our due as American citizens.

No more asking, no more begging, no more pleading – it is time to demand what is ours, and throw out the neocon bums who say otherwise.

This Land is our Land, and it belongs to the citizens who respect its laws and revere its concept of freedom. And anyone who says different can start packing their bags NOW - and I'll personally give them a lift to the airport.

2. in theory no
but the apparent answer is yes! It is too much to ask because it isin't happening. I think this is where the real angst in our country is coming from we thought we were different, we were taught we were different but the very hard truth is we aren't.

7. I'm sick of it too
I saw some moran wearing a Faux News hat at the supermarket and adrenaline started flowing though my veins. I called him a moron and flipped the bird at him so others could see (he wasn't looking). I don't know why, but I wanted to get up in his face and call him a moronic supporter of murder.

9. Here's some lyrics for you Nance...

...from a beautiful song, if you can find the album...

Artist: David Crosby
Album: If I Could Only Remember My Name...
Year: 1971
Title: What Are Their Names

I wonder who they are
The men who really run this land
And I wonder why they run it
With such a thoughtless hand

What are their names
And on what streets do they live
I'd like to ride right over
This afternoon and give
Them a piece of my mind
About peace for mankind
Peace is not an awful lot to ask

14. you'd think not
but we live in bizarro world, remember?

it's where peace groups are monitored and infiltrated as though they're terrorist organizations, where gay couples are refused the right to marry and live in peace despite the very people holding them back being exposed as false moralists, where a gold star dad is treated as an enemy combatant and beaten and kicked by 'America-loving' conservatives for pulling his memorial to honor his US military son, and the very document that defines our freedom is called "a g*d d**m piece of paper" by the selected leader of the country.

oh, and... war is peace!

sigh...

keep up the good fight nance, always.

21. I ask for
free and fair elections.
Free and fair elections are the bedrock upon which our constitutional democracy rests. Here we are in the year 2007 and we, the world's oldest democracy, still can't figure out how to have free and fair elections. We have voting machines that can be hacked by high school students, and a vote tabulating system that can't be seen by those who cast the votes. Our public elections have been privatized, and the source code to tabulate votes is unknown to all but those who make the voting machines. We're not talking about defense secrets here, so there's no need to hide the method with which our votes are counted.
As long as there's doubt about how votes are counted, our democracy and its constitution are compromised. The end result is low voter turnout, and some politicians thrive on the fact that only a few are paying attention or care.
In order to keep a more perfect union and preserve the blessings of liberty, we must have the confidence of the electorate. When more people vote we have a more honest government. Defective voting machines and secret vote counts can only serve to reduce voter participation. For a nation that was once the example for all democracies, we have devolved into a tin horn banana republic because the people have had good cause to lose faith in the electoral process. The time has come for our elected officials to provide the citizenry with voting machines that can verify the vote and a tabulating system that's open for all to see. If that's not possible then our votes should be on paper ballots deposited in a clear locked plastic box in the middle of the room for public inspection with the votes counted at the end of the day witnessed by all who wish to observe. All voters will have their thumbs marked with bright blue indelible ink to ensure no one votes more than once. We went half way around the world to provide that system for Iraq. Why would it be unacceptable here at home? By the way, it's cheaper than questionable machines.

True. But do you belive that the current Monark Elizabeth 2 have the power to sircumset the House of Common, in the Brittish Parlament if he want to?.. Dont belive that... If she do, he is out of office faster than everyone think.... Faster than your current President anyway...

King George III was in periodes ill, at chemical problem in his body was taking his toll. He may be "nutts" but not becouse he want to, but becouse he had a medical problem.. I dont know what the problem with your current president is. But I dobt it is medical, but becouse of hard misuse of narcotica over many year.. It doing some to pepole that type of "medical help" as some see it..

President GWB er nutt absolutely plain simpel nutts.. And dont know why the Congress are not pressing to send him, and the vise-president home to Texas... Or to a prision...

22. great rant nance
I have been perusing DU for a very long time. And your style of writing has impressed me the most. Therefore I will make a comment.
I believe your style is reminds me of Molly Ivins
I believe if their is a heaven then Molly is smiling down at you and saying "YOU GO GIRL"
I believe many people here at DU agree with that assessment
Here's my take on this post..........act like a dumb yahoo..
I don't believe it's an act.
This is one of my favorite quotes that fits my way of thinking!! "As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents more and more closely the soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."H.L.Mencken
Kudos to you Nance, and keep up the good fight

Or at minimum, a super-latte of your favorite coffee, or tea, or whatever.

ask a fish to walk on land?

ask a yak to swim the Pacific?

ask a Bengal tiger to become a vegetarian?

ask an earthworm to fly?

ask the President of the United States to speak coherently?

OOPS, you DID ask that one.

Well, as you well know, you have no more chance of that one,

29. Apparently, it is.
But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't! Something worth having and fighting for isn't necessarily easy, so asking for our rights and privileges as Americans is something we should, and need to do. Sure, it's hard sometimes, and the struggle makes us tired. But the right to ask for all of those things is bestowed on us by our founders.

Bravo, NanceGreggs, for reminding us of these most precious ideas. Now, more than ever, we need reminding.

42. Agreed. But I lean towards just retrieveing my rights with no questions asked. I suppose
I could concede a demand now and again.

The problem that I face personally, is that I feel asking or even demanding legitimizes the authority that has been usurped. They are thieves and quite literally killers.

The fact that our democratic leadership fails to confront them is very very disappointing.

Is it too much to ask that these words might PUBLICLY and LOUDLY issue forth from the lips of: Pelosi, Reid, Clinton, Obama, Biden, Kerry, Edwards, etal. and please fill-in-the-blank with ALL the rest of them? These words should issue forth from the leadership of BOTH the Democrats and the Republicans because these are (were) American values before the current infestation/occupation of the Oval Office. It's sad we have to read these truths from an eloquent spokesperson on 'Democratic Underground' instead of hearing them from our supposed Congressional "leadership" and potential candidates.
