F. Thompson woos SC voters by campaigning for USC football losses
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 08:49 AM by Netbeavis
There are two things you just don't kick in South Carolina...one is someone's dawg, the other is the local football coach. Unless you are a Clemson alumni or fan, Spurrier is viewed as the top man in the state.

How can anything positive come from comments like that? I mean, we live in a country where people literally live and die for football (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15910831/) and any jabs are not taken lightly...

Once again, I swear Freddie Kruger is trying to tank this "bid".

Thompson campaigns for two USC losses

Maybe Fred Thompson should have punted. Instead, the Republican presidential hopeful from Tennessee might have sacked his chances with Gamecock fans by targeting coach Steve Spurrier.

Thompson, the former U.S. senator from Tennessee who is seeking the 2008 GOP presidential nomination, was in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday, campaigning at the Florida-Tennessee football game. According to Politico.com, Thompson was “besieged” by fans of both schools to say for whom he was rooting.

“I’m too old to change now,” Thompson said. “I’ve been a Vol all my life. But I’ll tell you what, we can both do our best to beat the Ol’ Ball Coach.”

S.C. Rep. Michael Thompson, R-Anderson, is a major Fred Thompson supporter (although the two are not related) and a major Gamecock fan. Michael Thompson was displeased to hear his candidate’s comments.

“We’re going to have a little talk about that,” Thompson said. “That’s all right. He’ll be saying that after the Ol’ Ball Coach rings up about half-a-hundred on him.”

The Gamecocks and Volunteers play in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 27, three months before the Jan. 19 S.C. Republican primary.

All of this led the Elliott Bundy, spokesman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is running neck-and-neck with Thompson in S.C. polls, to quip: “This past Saturday at Williams-Brice, the three things everyone saw were Gamecocks, Bulldogs and Rudy stickers.”

I was at that game (that he referenced) this weekend. I don't know about stickers, but I saw Hillary and Dodd signs EVERYWHERE. (more than a few of which were torn down and ripped in half, not surprisingly). I don't recall seeing a single Rudy sign or sticker.
