A note to all concerned about this country
My job requires me to sit at my computer all day. While at work, I like to browse various web-sites. DU quickly became one of my favorite.

There is something that I have noticed not only here, but in alot of liberals that I talk to. There is an overwhelming feeling of "well that will never get, a)passed, b)voted on, c)the attention it deserves, d)through Congress or the WH" so I see no reason in supporting it."

Now, I know that the overwhelming frustration and anger towards what has happened to this country over the last 7 years has lead some to the conclusion that nothing can be done about it. I am not quite there yet, and I pray that I never get there.

I admit that fixing this country's problems, whether they be health care, education, the economy, the war, or any of the numerous problems facing us today, will be an uphill battle. We can not quit!!! We can not give up! We have to stand and fight. We have to demand that our rights are just that, our RIGHTS. We have to write letters, sign petitions, get out and talk.

This can not continue to happen. We will not survive as a nation if we keep giving up. Regardless of who you support in the election, push them. Do not let their feet out of the fire.

I urge YOU DU'ers DO NOT GIVE UP. We can be the once great nation we used to be.

Please forgive my naiveness, I just have to hold on to that hope.

1. I salute your positive outlook in the face of this tsunami of sh*t coming in daily,
knocking us down again and again. Iti's people like you that make this place so vital to the rest of us who have grown weary of the broken promises, the collusive votes, and the loss of power from our side. Our Constitution is in shreds, the economy is in free-fall, and still you persevere to see the bright side.

I don't know how you do it, but I salute you! :patriot:

Keep up that hope!

TC

3. Thank you, but
believe me I am sad, mad, frustrated, angry, and a little scared. I must admit that I am fairly new to paying attention this "tsunami of sh*t", so it is probably easier for me than for many. I just feel that hope is the only light we have. Believe me, I am in despair. I cry for all the lives lost, destroyed, and altered by this administration. It hurts me to my core to think the our own government could and would willingly do this to the very people it is supposed to protect.

That is why I support Kucinich. He gives me the hope to believe again.

2. I'd like to think that we (the people) are becoming more motivated and less
discouraged. Or, more motivated DESPITE being discouraged. Or even, more motivated BECAUSE we're discouraged. Maybe my cautious optimism is a result of finding such intelligent, thoughtful people here at DU and other forums, but even if that's the case, I'm now aware of a large number of like-thinking individuals out there which gives me the support to carry on.

I think of instances where groups of people have overthrown entire governments and regimes. We do have the power, we just need to find the best ways to accomplish our goals. I feel we're taking this seriously and we're sincerely trying.

5. Thanks for posting this.
Everything fluctuates, it seems. Political views and hope for the future, it's no different.

6. Hear, hear!
That is a really bad reason for not supporting an idea or a candidate:

"Gosh, I sure wish we could de-fund the Iraq war. But that'll never pass, and besides, those big Republic meanies will say bad things about us. We'll just have to water it down and bring a few home while accepting a permanent presence in Iraq."

"I really like Kucinich. Sigh, too bad he can't get elected. Guess I'll just have to hold my nose and find someone else to vote for."

"I'd really like universal single payer health care. But that can't pass, so I'll just accept one of the other proposals, which give the state another reason to treat me like a common criminal if for some reason I can't afford insurance under their new mandated plan."

Yes, thinking like that will really get someone ahead in life, won't it. Well it won't get us ahead in our political lives either.

8. Never give up, but the opponent is so powerful
Is that all we can do to control the world today...

i don't believe there is anyway to avoid any true coruption... every govt has failed the people. power corrupts.

i mean hell... the system is so corrupt that the education, the conditioning of our thoughts, is severely undermined, and failing. We are fed lies constantly, about virtually everything... they know how to manipulate this world far better than any of us...

9. So many things are interrelated and need fixing.
Income disparity in this country is related to health care, for example. People get paid less b/c health insurance costs so much to the employer. The decimation of unions by Reagan has a lot to do with the income disparity. Public financing of campaigns is what is needed to fix the lobbying/health care issue.

You get my drift here.

It's not going to be easy, but we must work more at the local level. Try to get progressive candidates to run for Congress. If nothing more, it gives you something to get your teeth into. I did that with Ned Lamont's campaign in 06. Making phone calls to Dems in the primary and to other voters in the general allowed me to talk to folks and hear what they were thinking.

My husband does voluntary political work at the precinct level. He goes into the neighborhood and knocks on doors for our alderman and our mayor. They are both progressive Dems.

Now that I'm retired I can work for my candidates in 08. Right now I am supporting John Edwards, but I am glad Dennis Kucinich is in the debates. We need his voice and his message. I pray that his presence will have a good effect on the top tier. If Hillary gets the nomination, I will probably get involved in the campaign at some level, but not in the way I was with Ned.

It's not going to be easy, but we gotta walk that long road, I'm afraid. Keep your eyes on the prize!
