1. He's another rich Harvard grad to me! Race isn't the important issue for me.
Tiger Woods thinks of himself as Asian.

You can be whatever you want to be.

22. "Another RICH Harvard grad"
Edited on Wed Sep-19-07 04:42 PM by BeyondGeography
It's just not what he is, nor is it complimentary, nor, I'm sure, would he like to see himself described that way.

Glad you like him, though.

60. He's one of those nifty hybrid humans!
My favorite race ;-)

Really though, it doesn't matter that much. His background does, in a way, make him at least symbolically more representative of the American public than most though.

If he wants to self-identify as black, that's fine too. Race is a pretty fluid thing anyway, lacking in clear definitions. Either way, whatever he is, he seems to be a decent person, and would most likely do a good job in the role he seeks.

23. Not all Harvard grads are rich!
My daughter is attending Harvard now, and she and we are not "rich".

She may or may not be rich one day.....but it won't be because she is simply a "rich Harvard Grad", but rather because not only did she "earn" her way TO Harvard, but she "earned" her way THROUGH Harvard......which is no small feat.

27. The only reason why race is brought up is...
the fact that if he became president that is something that has never happened. It doesn't REALLY matter...or it shouldn't at least. It's like saying someone becomes the first woman president. The fact that it is a woman shouldn't matter because people should all be the same. However, it is still a first.

(I mean that metaphorically, of course.) Your post just brings up what is being discussed often in the media, and by politicians, every week about Obama. Obama has been asked questions about this. Obama has been criticized by some black leaders (by Jesse Jackson just today, as a matter of fact) as not being "black enough."

Your post just brings the matter up for discussion in a dignified way, and asks the question of readers what they think about it.

It is perplexing why some readers got so angry about your post. But there's nothing wrong with it.

(I say this as someone who has not decided on a candidate, but is leaning toward Obama.)

82. I see him as wrong.
Edited on Wed Sep-19-07 10:11 PM by LWolf
I don't see him through an ethnic/racial lens, but through a left/progressive lens, and I see him as the wrong choice for the nation.

84. he looks black
to whatever extent it matters, he is black because that's what he looks like and therefore what his experiences in life are based on.

87. It just goes to show how unprogressive the US really is
We're not as progressive as many Democrats imagine us to be, nor are we the Christian conservatives many Republicans imagine us to be.

94. No.
He is not black or white. Look at him, and you can see that he is brown. This should not cause undue confusion, except for those who are limited to black & white thinking.
