RWDSU President Praises Hillary Clinton's Health Plan (9/20/07)
The president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union is praising Sen. Hillary Clinton’s health care proposal as “a sensible plan that will work for working people.”
“Virtually every union in this country is going head to head with employers that want to shift health care costs on to the backs of workers,” said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum.
“Too often the pay raises unions negotiate for workers end up going to pay for higher co-pays. Hillary Clinton’s plan will change that equation by reigning in costs and offering new choices for employers and workers,” he said.
“Our country desperately needs to get a handle on health care costs and extend coverage to the uninsured. Sen. Clinton’s plan will do both,” he said.
Appelbaum said that what makes Clinton’s proposal particularly appealing is that “it falls in the realm of the politically possible.”
“What I’m interested in isn’t creating a new health care system; it’s covering the uninsured and protecting the health care benefits my members and their families already have. Hillary Clinton’s plan will do that,” Appelbaum said, adding, “I’m looking for solutions that are grounded in reality, not rhetoric. I think other union activists are, too.”
