Johanns Resigns as Agriculture Secretary (running for Hagel's seat)
Johanns Resigns as Agriculture Secretary
By CQ Staff | 10:10 AM; Sep. 20, 2007

Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns resigned Thursday amid reports he will run for the Senate in his home state of Nebraska.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better secretary of agriculture,” President Bush said in accepting Johanns’ resignation.

“He worked hard to put in motion a good farm bill. ... He set the framework for success, and I’m confident we can get a good bill passed.”

Published reports in Nebraska have said Johanns, a Republican former governor, will run for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel. Johanns has not officially confirmed those reports, but Bush hinted strongly that they are accurate.

1. GOP is doing their best to save every seat possible
Johanns is very popular and their best hope of keeping
this seat in GOP column.

It is my guess, that when they heard Bob Kerrey (DEM) might
be interested--GOP decided to get Johanns to run.

4. He wasn't done with the big farm bill--apparently that was his one big, important job
as AgSec, and he abandoned it halfway thru. Putting his own ambitions first--nice. I hope Kerrey trounces this milquetoast fuckwad.

6. IIt was reported that Kerrey was very interested.
He will have to weigh carefully his chances.

The Party will have to decide where best to used resources.

No disrespect to Ben Nelson, but he gives good insight.
Ben Nelson is one of the most conservative Democrats and
therefore is often in agreement with GOP, Nebraska
must be very very conservative. Johanns is very popular.
These are the questions the party has to ask. Also where,
then should we invest our money?????
