Unhappy Dems?? Take a look at Gordon Smith.
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 05:55 PM by grasswire
Gordon Smith has moved from being a reliable Bush ally to today's political stance not because he is a "good guy" but because Democrats in Oregon pressured him!

If Dems would stop hassling Dems with Republican talking points, and start battering the Republicans who are in lockstep jamming up Congress, we might get some movement on the issues we care about.

Gordon Smith is the poster boy for what will happen if Dems start yammering at GOP politicians. He has swung to the left in the last six months.

Make it happen, DUers. This is something we can do to actually make progress.

1. As much as I wish that was correct analysis- it isn't
Gordon Smith is up for re-election in a progressive state were a large majority opposes the war.

He does these sorts of "moves to the so called center" every time he's up for re-election in an attempt to deceive Oregonians into thinking he's some sort of moderate when in fact for most of his term, he's a consistent ally of Bush and the far right.

2. that's what I said.
His constituents pressured him. He moved to the left. He isn't reliably on the left for the long term, but he will vote carefully between now and election time.

4. It's not the pressure

For 4 1/2 years of every term, the doesn't give a rats ass about "pressure." He reverts back to a far right stooge after he's been re-elected.

Hopefully, Oregonians will see through his game this time- provided that the Democratic nominee actually runs a strong campaign against his bullshit (which hasn't happened yet).

3. the point is...
...that as long as the pressure is on him, he will not displease Oregonians on the key issue of war.

6. I'm one of his constituents
and while Smith does occasionally swing left, it is always a move of self-preservation.

He's in for a hard battle to keep his seat, because most Oregonians are not fooled by his switcheroos, and they haven't exactly pleased his conservative base, either.

Oregon does have three other heroes, though: Ron Wyden, Peter DeFazio, and Earl Blumenauer.

7. Gordon's a graduate of the ASSPG
That's the Arlen Specter School of Political Grandstanding, and Smith has a summa cum laude. He'll make noises that sound conciliatory or like he's considering coming off the reservation, but when the votes are counted, he's solidly in the Republican column, every time, just like Specter.

8. He is a Bush ally running for re-election in a BLUE state, and will go down.
And he knows it, as you can see.
They are having to pretend  but watch out the day after the election if re-elected.

9. All of the above comments
are correct.

Gordon is an opportunist if nothing else.He sees the writing on the wall...and it turns out the writing says: Exit.He will appear more left leaning as election time approaches, doing what is politically expediant....then if re-elected,(horror of horrors) he will return to being a supreme ass.

I earnestly hope that some serious money is allocated to this particular race,as we need to get Smith OUT OF OFFICE!!
