Hillary Clinton: I'm not a lesbian
NY Daily News: Hillary Clinton: I'm not a lesbian
Friday, September 21st 2007

Hillary Clinton officially declared she's not a lesbian - not that there's anything wrong with that.

During an interview with The Advocate to be published next week, Sean Kennedy, the gay magazine's news and features editor, asked the presidential candidate, "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"

"People say a lot of things about me, so I really don't pay any attention to it," Sen. Clinton (D-N.Y.) replied. "It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over. People will say what they want to say."

Kennedy told the Daily News he's convinced. "I 100% believe she's a straight, heterosexual woman," he said.

It was jsut to create a one-liner answer should it come up later. Why the hell else would it have been asked or answered at all.

Hillary irritates me more and more each day.

17. Do you honestly believe
That a reporter, even one for The Advocate, would ask that question unbiden? Unthinkable, even these days.

This means that the Hill campaign put this question into play. It is purely strategic and said nothing about what she would do for GBLT community which this magazine puports to represent (or at least market to).

It smacks of Bush's whispering campaign against Ann Richards. I agree it was strategic. That's why it irritates me all the more. It shows that Sen. Clinton is considered a real threat if they have to attack her like this. Rumors that she is a lesbian? Give me a break.

This was a preemptive move to water down any future concerns. It says nothing about her at all.

Who would be running such a whispering campaign anyhow, Hillary is the best candidate the Republicans could hope to run against. Why else would Rove talk about her at all?

49. Unlimited Access, a NY Times bestseller book reported a lesbian encounter as fact
Maybe that's how this rumor got started. There were a number of stories about Hillary's secret lesbian life in tabloids at the checkout counter too, as I recall. Everybody reads them. How many believe them? I mean, Weekly World News is the gospel truth, isn't it?

http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=hillary_was_right

The most infamous of the Regnery titles is undoubtedly Gary Aldrich's Unlimited Access, which included such "revelations" as lesbian encounters in the White House's basement showers, Hillary Clinton ordering miniature crack pipes to hang on the White House Christmas tree, and the claim--backed by anonymous sources--that Clinton made frequent trips to the nearby Marriott to shack up with a mistress "who may be a celebrity." That last bit helped catapult Unlimited Access to the top of The New York Times's best-seller list, though Aldrich soon revealed to The New Yorker's Jane Mayer that the Marriott story was "not quite solid" and, indeed, was "hypothetical." But according to Aldrich, it was Regnery editor Richard Vigilante who had moved the Marriott bit out of the epilogue (where it had been presented as a "mock investigation") and into the middle of the book (where it was presented as an actual occurrence). Vigilante, Aldrich told Mayer, threatened not to publish the book if Aldrich didn't agree to the changes.

38. Really?
Do you really think a reporter is going to ask a question like that of a frontrunner in a political campaign with any degree of seriousness?

Have you read the Advocate? Do you really think gay people are so clumsy and inarticulate that the first question asked of anyone interviewed is: "Well are you gay? Huh...are you? Cause I heard rumors and whispers that you might be."

57. Oh, please. Do you really think I think that gays are "clumsy and articulate"? Do you really?
Have you every read the Advocate? (have you really?). Do you really think it is unusual for them to ask celebrities who are rumored to be gay about it (how about Madonna and Marcia Cross?).

There have been rumors about Hillary Clinton being gay for years and years. There are always rumors about outspoken women being gay. Why wouldn't they ask about it?

You know, I'm not even supporting Hillary. I'm in John Edwards' camp. But all this stupid faux outrage about stupid stuff ("she must have TOLD the Advocate to ask her that!") is driving me crazy. Give me a fucking break already. (really!)

69. I think
The expectations for questioning Madonna might be a little different from a politician. I could be completely wrong about it though. And somehow I do not think a magazine like that would ask a politician a question like that based on a few tabloid right wing smear jobs.

70. that's a nice response
seriously, no sarcasm this time. :-) My post was kind of venomous (as a consequence of being accused of being anti-gay and for my being tired to people seeming to attribute Machiavellian motives to Hillary for absolutely everything). But I appreciate the tone in your response.

We can, of course, disagree (about the Hillary thing and the Advocate -- not about my thinking gay people are clumsy and inarticulate, because that's still offensive). You obviously don't think so, but personally, I'd be surprised if the Advocate didn't ask that question, given:

1) The Advocate holds the editorial position that being gay is something to be proud of
2) The Advocate holds the editorial position that being gay and hiding it is wrong
3) A sizable number of people think that being interviewed by the Advocate itself is evidence of being gay
4) People, right wing nuts that they may be, have publicly insinuated that Hillary is gay.

Hillary is very political, so I wouldn't put it past her to use a magazine to further her agenda if she thought it would benefit her. But A) that's what a politician is supposed to do and I don't consider that a negative and B) it would be silly in this case.

42. If she agreed to an interview with The Advocate she knew
the question was coming. It is not a big deal.

The funny thing is that this rumor has been pushed for years by the righties and the only people who knew for sure (for all of these years) that she was not a lesbian were all the other lesbians in the country.

Anyone who went through the feminist wars knows this is standard operating procedure by the righties - accuse any strong woman of being a lesbian and that takes care of the problem.

This time around enough people will say "So what if she is, her personal life is none of our business". No one defended women of either stripe on this issue in the past. Hopefully it will be different this time around.

I remember reading a Liz Smith column in "Parade Magazine" early in Bill Clinton's first term, where Liz Smith wrote that Hillary Clinton and Liza Minelli were lovers.

It stuck in my mind all these years because it was just such an odd thing to read in "Parade Magazine".

Maybe I'm just old fashioned but it is truly none of my business what a person's sexuality is. If they want to volunteer that information that's fine. I have had many gay and lesbian friends, coworkers, doctors, etc and I can't ever recall any of them asking me, nor have any of my heterosexual contacts.

It just legitimizes gossip as a political tool. The best response is: "If I start commenting on every rumor there would be no end to it and I resent the question. If you have any serious questions ask them. Otherwise this interview is over."
