Senate Primary Field in N.H. Narrows

Associated Press Writer

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - An attorney who was seeking the
Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate withdrew Friday
and threw her support to former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen
as the best chance to defeat incumbent Republican
Sen. John Sununu.

“This is a time of extraordinary challenge and risk for
our nation,” Katrina Swett said at a news conference.
“We have to unite behind the strongest possible
challenger to John Sununu and that candidate is clearly
Jeanne Shaheen.”

Shaheen is among a handful of Democrats recruited by
national party officials to target vulnerable seats in
2008. She lost to Sununu in 2002 by 5 percentage
points, and he is expected to seek re-election next year.

Swett, part of a prominent political family, had been
the best funded challenger to Shaheen, raising $1.2
million, and her departure leaves only one little-
known Democratic challenger. Portsmouth Mayor Steve
Marchand dropped out last week after Shaheen entered
the race.
