Campaign Fundraising Down, But Maybe It’s Just the Heat

It is a truism that little gets accomplished in the nation’s capital in August because of the congressional recess.
The dropoff in D.C. activity that month extends to political party fundraising, as was evidenced by the monthly campaign finance reports filed Thursday by the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The $9.7 million that the two national party committees combined to raise last month was their smallest combined take in any month this year.
Of that total, $5.1 million was raised by the RNC and $4.6 million was raised by the DNC. The RNC, which has outraised the DNC in every month this year, has taken in $57.3 million for the year and began September with $16 million in the bank and no debts. The DNC raised $36.8 million in the first eight months of 2007, banked $4.7 million and has $2 million in debts.
One of the DNC’s more notable receipts was a $15,000 contribution from Searchlight Leadership Fund, the leadership political action committee linked to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
The DNC transferred $100,000 in August to the Kentucky Democratic Party, which is assisting the effort of Democrat Steve Beshear, a former Kentucky lieutenant governor, to unseat Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher in the Nov. 6 election.
