"Smearing the Military"
The new line seems to be that the MoveOn ad "smears everyone in the military." That's because Petraeus' report, supposedly, is a reflection of what troops observe on the battleground.

Um, how about character smears and attacks against a decorated Navy veteran, including charges that the United States Navy itself LIED about what did/didn't happen, and go around decorating people who don't deserve the honors they receive? Doesn't that smear not only John Kerry, not only his shipmates, not only witnesses, not only the Navy brass, but EVERYone who ever received a medal?

How about little purple-heart bandaids that make FUN of wounds suffered in battle, including shrapnel still carried within veterans' bodies, and the medal that honors them?

And THEY are whining now?!?!??

Unbelievable.

3. They hold them up as human body shields.
When people attack BushCo, they hold up the troops, hide behind them, and yell, "You're attacking the troops! How dare you attack the troops!!!"

4. I just wish the Democrats would have the balls to point this out
whenever they are on a News Program and confronted with accusations of questioning their support of the troops...

But we all know why the GOP did this, to draw attention away from the Webb sponsored troop rotation...

5. If the military is so weak
that mere criticism makes them wilt
then they need to find something gentler to do

6. Shrub appoints Patreus
to serve as cover for Little Lord Pissypants. (bush now thinks the was in Iraq is Patreus' war. We are supposed to think it is Patreus' war too)
The plan is that again - we are unpatriotic, this time for criticizing a military man.
This is another example of the altered reality Will Pitt was talking about.
Or, as Colbert would say - truthiness.

7. The GOP has a pattern of voting every time they can
against the Soldiers' interests.

They cut Vet. Benefits.

8. First of all, I don't have to respect any of these creeps, military or otherwise...
Yes, Betraeus is a bought and paid for steaming pile of right-wing toilet bobbers. I'm so sick of being told that I have to respect these guys simply because they put on a uniform. Ass-kissing, chickenshit, indeed. It seems like all the chatter coming out of the american fascist party centers on the time-honored authoritarian tradition of bowing before the uniform. Sig heil.

But I agree with you, the Republicans are hypocrites. They did far worse to Kerry, Murtha and the soldiers who authored the letter criticizing the Iraq bloodbath. And they have the unmitigated audacity to bitch about something as innocuous as the MoveOn ad? What a joke.

Worse, by far, are the ass-kissing, chickenshit Democrats who signed on.

If implying a general is a traitor has become worthy of censure by the US Senate, then the Republicans can no longer name call either. We should now be free to censure the Bush Administration and the Republican party for calling us "unpatriotic" and "traitors".

To point out the worst in your opposition as something to strive for is a race to the bottom, and NOT really ennobling for us in any way ....

I mean: in the end: If I am using the worst of the GOP as a model for my own behavior or thinking, then WTF makes me any different than them ? ......

I rejected the stupid insults of the right .... and frankly, I think the choice of words used in that ad provided just this sort of opening for them: as shallow and as insignificant as it is ....

NOBODY likes the name calling, and we have made strides in public perception by pointing out those faults of our opposition ....

Now is NOT the time to EMBRACE those same faults, and adopt those totems ....

Let's rise above them, not strive to BE them ....

WHY resort to name calling when we have FACTS ?

Petraeus could have been refuted ON THE FACTS .... without the distracting adolescent schoolyard taunts ....
