Democrats: Party of detail so far in '08
Democratic presidential contender Bill Richardson was discussing his health care plan recently when he paused to toss out a question and a request. "How will I pay for it? Ask me!"

He was asked and quickly obliged with an answer.

The Democrats who are running for president are flush with policy proposals, position papers and fact sheets. The leading Republican contenders, not so much.

Rudy Giuliani has his "12 Commitments." Mitt Romney has his "Strategy for a Stronger America." John McCain still serves up his "straight talk." But, whether by design or default, they leave far more to the imagination than do the Democrats in discussing the big issues.

1. The GOP has always run on platitudes and image. Dems have always
demanded far more from their candidates. The question then is, why do Dems lose elections with clearly better-quality candidates? Because they usually fail the "beer with" test, which is the deciding factor in general elections--not policies, vision, or intellectual ability. Sigh.

3. Style vs Substance
"Vagueness is a sign of weakness" - good quote from consultant in the linked article.

When times are tough, voters are more likely to choose candidates with substance.

4. The Republicans have shit to offer the American worker. Of course they'd offer fewer details.
All they have are feel-good aphorisms that appeal to the American sense of individualism and pride.

5. Question: Do more people read novels or watch tv?
The Republicans know this is about marketing. Marketing sells; sells feelings, sells passions, sells id. Democrats have always been weak because they think.

Logic: It's Bad for America

6. With Republicans, ignorance is bliss
They feel it's better to scare people with visions of terrorism and high taxes. They do it because it works.

It's no secret why Republicans are against education, healthcare, and security. The want to keep Americans uneducated, unhealthy, and afraid. They pretend to be for security while not securing our ports, creating new terrorists, killing American soldiers, letting Americans die in Katrina, etc.

Dems offer something significantly more substantial (read intelligent). Yes, even corporate-whore Hillary offers useful plans that will actually help people.
