Gingrich: "If enough people are worried about stopping Sen. Clinton...I’d frankly consider running"
Gingrich will consider running if ‘enough people are worried about stopping Clinton’
By Bob Cusack

http://thehill.com/campaign-2008/gingrich-will-consider-running-if-enough-people-are-worried-about-stopping-clinton-2007-09-21.html

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said Friday that, if enough people are worried about stopping Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), he will consider running for president.

Asked on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” whether he will run for president, Gingrich said, “I don’t know ... If in October we find there are enough people who are worried about stopping Sen. Clinton and enough people who feel that we need a more aggressive advocate of real change, then I’d frankly consider running.”

<<snip>>

Gingrich suggested on C-SPAN that Republican White House hopefuls are not matching up with Democrats on healthcare, saying that Sens. Clinton and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) have “fairly serious” healthcare proposals.

<<snip>>

Asked if he has any interaction with former President Clinton, Gingrich said he has more interaction with Sen. Clinton, noting that they served on a health information technology advisory group.

“I’ve always described both of them as hardworking and professional and people who I think Republicans should never underestimate,” Gingrich said.

1. How magnanimous of Newt Gingrich to offer to step up and "stop Hillary."
He's a gallant one, that Newt.

19. Talk about missing the point!
Most of the people in the "stop Hillary" camp are Democrats who don't want another corporatist president. They'd hardly be likely to vote for a GOP hard liner like Gingrich.

Still, if he wants to fall on his sword for the good of his party, by all means he should be encouraged to do so.

We'd be rid of him permanently.

sufficiently inlaid with rare gemstones.

Only the best for our Newt!

A cousin and lifelong Democrat describes Gingrich as "a lard-ass fussbudget."

Gingrich wants $30 million to run

By LIBBY QUAID, Associated Press Writer 32 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he still might run for president if supporters will pledge $30 million by November.

"You can't bring all your good ideas if you don't have the resources to communicate," Gingrich told reporters Thursday at a breakfast in Washington.

Gingrich is holding a national Internet-based workshop next week. Afterward, his top political adviser, Randy Evans, will spend October seeing if he can generate pledges of $30 million, which Gingrich said would be needed to compete with the leader in the GOP presidential money chase, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

20. Poor Newt...
“This is a very complicated race,” Gingrich said. “ Romney can write a personal check for $50 million or $100 million. And I wouldn’t go out on a lark and be in a situation where you couldn’t possibly compete.”

Maybe we should take up a collection.

That's such a false flag statement it's insulting.

No one here would vote for Newt over even Hillary and it's disingenuous to even suggest it.

22. Then explain the ABC (Anybody But Clinton) strategy that some have proposed here on DU
If someone's motto is Anybody But Clinton (which I have seen here on DU) then that suggests that person would not vote for Sen. Clinton under any circumstances, either in the primary or general campaign. Which means that person, sadly, would vote for Gingrich over Clinton.

Their motto hasn't been Anybody But Clinton, except if Gingrich runs. It's been Anybody But Clinton, period.

So the person was not being disingenuous to suggest some DUers would vote for Gingrich over Clinton.

25. I would think (using simple good sense) that the vast majority
of DUers who feel that way would simply vote third party. Hardly a desirable outcome, but not out of the question considering how she's been shoved down our throats by people who've shown themselves to be completely uninterested (and often actively opposed) to the wishes of the real progressives and liberals in the party.

And 'real progressives' want *progress* - and that needs winning the Presidential election.

43. For years AB (x) was terminology used in the primaries
If the majority of people preferred anyone but the front runner. Though I heard of people wanting an ABCarter and an ABClinton, I have never seen the other candidates actually select one as the ABx candidate.

The use of ABB in 2004 made no sense - as much as 40% of the population likely decided in 2000, that they would vote against Bush AND 40% knew they would never vote for the Democrat. In any year, there is a chance that your favorite wins. Kerry was my favorite in 2004. I think the constant whines of people like Carville of Kerry being ABB, hurt as it gave independents that even Democrats saw no reason to vote for him. It hurts me - especially as Clinton was close to my least favorite in 1992, but I never, not even once thought that I should pout and say I was voting for him because he was ABB. Instead, I read his "putting people first book".

28. No bullshit: The only way the GOP beats Clinton is with Dem help.
Stay at home, write in Dennis or Nader, or vote for the Republican:
the three ways Democrats can help defeat Clinton (if she's our nominee) in '08.
That's not 'bullshit', that's fact.

11. Repubs are so scared and desparate Gingrich just might get it
I think it's a pretty strange request, but it might work. Reminds me of when, I believe it was, Oral Roberts said he must raise 6 million dollars or God would strike him down. Except here Gingrich is requesting 30 million or the Democrats will win the White House. To a Republican that's probably about the same thing. To a Democrat, both are equally desperate and pathetic.

And by the way, like rudi, does he have another wife in mind. Maybe a hot number to try to outdo, rudi and thompson.

35. Repubs are clamoring for any ray of hope, not necessarily Newt
But if he can convince enough Republicans that he's their man, it just might work. As of now, Republicans are not clamoring for Newt. The one thing we have to be wary of is that Newt is smart and devious, like Karl Rove. He keeps a lot of political tricks up his sleeve. Be forewarned!
