1. All according to plan.
Dems are just forcing the Republicans into a corner on Iraq. It's win-win for them.

If the bills pass? Great, we're coming home, and it's all thanks to the Democrats, increasing the chances of a good 2008.

If the bills fail? Great, the Republicans are again on record supporting Bush's failing strategy, making it even harder for them to pretend they're not pro-war in 2008, increasing the chances of a good 2008.

4. The Democrats are politicians, not soldiers.
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 12:59 AM by Kelly Rupert
The bills were indeed win-win for the Democrats. They were also, as you point out, win-lose for the soldiers; clearly one outcome was better than the other. I'm not saying that the failure of the bills was a morally-acceptable outcome--just politically acceptable for the party that introduced them. And since I tend to support that party, I take some small amount of solace in that. Some weeks, a few points in the political game is all you can salvage. After all, it's the outcome of this year's political game that determines what happens in real life down the road.
