Calculating the true coalition casualties in Iraq.
According to http://www.icasualties.org">www.icasualties.org, there have been 3799 American troops killed since the US invaded Iraq. That's the number that is most commonly used by the media. But there are many more casualties that are not included in this calculation.

There have been 300 "coalition" members KIA in Iraq since the occupation began. These are actual military members from countries who are officially "coalition members."

That brings the total so far to 4099.

There have also been 1001 reported deaths of civilian contractors. Many of these are private security forces from companies such as DynCorp, Blackwater USA, Aegis, and Triple Canopy.

So now our total sits at 5100.

There have also been 7460 Iraqi Security Force members killed. These are the members of the Iraqi army and police forces who are fighting side by side and who, according to Pentagon reports, have taken over much of the day to day security in Iraq.

So the total of all men and women who have been fighting in Bush's Global War on Terror (excluding Afghanistan, of course, but that's a whole new set of casualties, now totalling 696 soldiers) is now 12560. That number is three times the number usually cited by media sources and the Bush administration.

I think it's important that we do not lose sight of the fact that the administration has been "lying with statistics" since the occupation began.

1. I have read elsewhere that the number of American military deaths
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 09:02 AM by snappyturtle
is far higher than reported. This under reporting supposedly due to omitting deaths on helicopters or in hospitals, e.g. Landstuhl.....have you heard anything along this line? This report concluded that the only deaths counted, attributed to the occupation, were those killed outright in battle.????

edit: I don't have a link. Will have to think about where I saw this.

2. That I don't know
I suspect that there may be more casualties that haven't been calculated. One thing I do know, though, is that many of the WIA would not have survived in any war previous to this one. The reason for this is the vastly improved field medical care and the way that catastrophic injuries are being treated now. When many of the men and women get out of the hospitals and eventually make it back to "our world" you will see a lot of people missing arms and legs. Some of these would have been KIA in Vietnam due to the fact that they had to be medevaced from the jungle and sometimes that took a while. We also have a lot of men and women with catastrophic brain injuries who you probably will never see. They probably will never recover enough to leave a hospital bed. I seriously doubt that when one of these soldiers dies months after their injuries were sustained that they are included in the KIA list. I would be willing to put money on it that they are simply removed from the list and their deaths are attributed to natural causes or some such idiocy.

3. Yes, I agree...especially with your last sentence. I've been
thinking hard and as I recall more about the report I'm trying to remember, I think it claimed using DOD numbers! When we consider how they count the Iraqi dead...and categorize them...whether they were shot in the front of the head or back....you KNOW they're playing around with our numbers too. imho

4. That belief has been floated
and refuted by iCasualties.org many times.

http://icasualties.org/oif/Dow.aspx

The following is a list of U.S. Fatalities who have died in hospitals in Germany and The United States. Some have claimed that The Department of Defense does not report these deaths, they are obviously mistaken.
Note: these deaths are included in our overall totals.

That is not to say that there is no selective interpretation of the stats.

5. The way they "work with numbers" (cough)....
we will never get a true count of all the deaths attributed to this insane occupation.
