A Senate panel is set to vote on the controversial nomination of Hans von Spakovsky, who was placed on the Federal Election Commission as a recess appointee a year and a half ago. Democrats have expressed reservations without overtly threatening to torpedo the nomination.
Von Spakovsky, who has held his position since Jan. 4, 2006, has faced a rocky confirmation process, as critics demanded that he publicly answer for work he did at the Justice Department.
In a letter to senators, Wade Henderson, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, accused von Spakovsky of working systematically to block poor and minority voters from the polls under policies such as a Georgia identification law “akin to a Jim Crow-era poll tax.”
Henderson cited von Spakovsky’s record as counsel to the assistant attorney general for civil rights in questioning his credentials to serve on the commission.
“Serious questions have been raised about whether or not you were respectful of the right of Americans to vote,” Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., said during von Spakovsky’s confirmation hearing in June.
