Why must Dems have a favorite Bible verse?
During the debate yesterday, Russert asked the candidates"what is your favorite Bible verse?"

If we truly are a nation of MANY religions , and we ARE committed to separation of church and state, why would he ask this question? (and will anyone ever ASK Russert WHY he asked this question?)

Was this a SETUP for a similar question to be asked to Republicans?...so they can use it to appeal to their base?:banghead:

1. For the same silly-assed reason W had to name his favorite philosopher
The media is looking for a faux paux while playing with a question in the other party's domain.

5. That would be a more relevant question than a bible verse
Getting some idea who might influence a leader's thinking is good to know. When Bush said Jesus Christ it set off some responses in my mind. Irrelevant is a certain passage from a particular book. As valuable as 'what is your favorite quote from Dante's Inferno?'

12. I agree
I was so mad when I heard the question I didn't even listen to the answers. A very blatant attempt to make the candidates look bad.

2. Well, supposedly Dems are now pandering to evangelicals...
Maybe it was a test to see if they could pull at least one Bible verse out of the hat!

3. Many threads on this last night right when Timmy asked it
Timmy just doing the Lord's work making sure that GOD would still be guiding the country. My impression was that the question was to make Dems look bad or not religious enough. Sort of a religious test for office that is outlawed in the constitution.
I wrote NBC immediately. I think Russert really sucks anyway.

7. Agreed. And I hate Russert, too.
(Not to be a dick, but you might want to change your sig to 'if you're...'--I'm sure someone will use that to criticize the substance of what you post.)

After the debate, he and Matthews were criticizing some of the candidates for not using verses in the Bible. Kucinich was the one who didn't use a real Bible verse; they attributed it to Richardson though, and made it seem like most didn't. Weirdly, right after saying Richardson's verse wasn't from the Bible, they said his was the Sermon on the Mount.

They were also pretty upset that all of the examples were from the NT.

19. Here it is: Esther 8:9
Then the king's scribes were called at that time, in the third month Sivan, on the twenty-third day of the month; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded to the Jews, and to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India to Ethiopia, one hundred twenty-seven provinces, to every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, and to the Jews in their writing, and in their language.

Didn't Bill Clinton use to be a satrap?

10. Because
Americans are largely unwilling to elect a non-Christian president. Such a person would clearly have no morals or ethical standards without the HOLY BIBLE guiding their lives.

23. Very funny. So, sir or madam, then why do you prefer Rhode Island over South Carolina?
Since the stripes represent the original 13 states.... If one is your favorite why do you dislike the rest? That sounds like an appropriately lame Timmy question to me.

17. I'd consider this to be a problem too...
If they weren't all self-proclaimed Christians. I think such a question is good, as one's answer to this question could reveal much about their views on issues related to religion.

20. Is this a trick question?
How about that America is still very much Christian in orientation and, whether you like it or not, an appeal to the moderate Christians is an important piece in working towards victory.

Stop looking at it with judgemental eyes and see it as a political reality that will help ensure Democratic success. No one appeals to the atheist vote because it is such a small percentage of the population. If it was much bigger, you would see both sides appealing to atheists.

We need someone to speak out for separation of church and state.
