Lunch @ DU Diner - Today's Special : Batteries Charged!!!
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 12:21 PM by mdmc
I just back from having lunch at my local Broadway (My cities main street) Diner. I was alone at the counter, stewing in my Dean loses.

Another man, a local, came in. When asked what he wanted, he replied, "Well, I'll take the special, but what we need is Bush out of the White House." He continued talking with the chef, and wait staff, all of whom were interested and in agreement. I said nothing, but was overwhelmed with joy.

Then one of the local landlords came in. He was amazed by the list of cities in NY that were on the brink bankruptcy. He is very wealthy, joked that his tax cut wasn't worth it. I felt like I was dreaming.

I mentioned that Kerry can beat Bush. The first guy agreed, but added, "I wouldn't count your guy out yet." He remembered me from one of the outreach efforts I did for Dean! I was amazed!

We didn't get to talk primary shop much; the Mayor walked in! He is a liberal Republican, and had a framed photo of himself with Senator Schumer. The owner of the diner laughed, and said it was going to be the only photo on the wall with a Republican in it. The mayor mentioned that he would support Schumer for Governor (for NY. Wild!).

I left a hefty tip, and ran home to post. It was amazing to find such interest in politics and such like minded individuals. Two of the Bush basher were Republicans, the rest of us were Democrats. There were about 7 people in on the conversation, and it truly was heaven.

I hope that reading this might lift the spirits of a fellow du'ers suffering from primary blues. Hang in there, AMERICA!

3. I sure love hearing stories like that!
Mr. RR belongs to a "social club"-one of those "members only" places you see in cities-like a VFW. It's a bar full of old-timers from his old neighborhood, and John is one of the youngest guys there. He has gotten in arguments over the years with some of the old guys there who hated Clinton. He was there last week and told me he was amazed at how many of these men have changed their tune. They see their retirement savings diminishing, their children getting laid off, and small businesses in the neighborhood going under. One of the guys-a Vietnam Vet- who used to go on tirades about Clinton's draft-dodging is now the biggest critic of Bush's AWOL status.

The tide is a-turnin' for sure....

and the same thing happens. There was a lot of Clinton bashing, and they all bash Hillary, but now they have turned on Bush. This bar has some army - national guard personnel frequent it, and they HATE Bush.
The biggest political fights have been between Army folk and one Bush supporter (My dads friend Hank).
